Going Long and Hard.

See pic of my cockpit. I've already refined it. Replaced the zip ties with a velcro strap so I can take the mobile charger on/off. Being that I don't drink anything apparently I also converted my left FeedBag for food and put the second bottle in my frame bag with the Nalgene. I've also realized yesterday that I can ditch my NanoPuff. Just running a LS base and my Outdoor Research shell are more than warm enough, I'll throw my 686Jacket in the saddle bag in case I need to stop.

In other news, I blew my rear brake yesterday. One of the master cylinder seals shrunk enough to allow fluid to pass through and out of the line. While it may not be related to the cold, I was completely without a brake yesterday and today. More than likely I'll throw on my mechanical calipers just so I can repair in the field if needed.

Hydraulic Brake failure oh what a surprise 🙄

Good thing you got that out of the way now and are changing to realible brakes 🙂

It seems a lot of your front of the bike packing setup is a pain because it needs to clear the brake levers. Just run coaster brakes!
I'd rather run no brakes than cable brakes. Water on the cable, use em a few times, night sets in, water freezes, pedal the next 400 miles with the brakes stuck on.

These brakes have been flawless, I should just rebuild the lever and not change anything. I woke up screaming from the thought of having a mechanical brake on my bike.

After a hefty conversation with my Sram buddies, we decided it would be best to run a mechanical over a hydro. My rear brake failure was 100% caused by the seals shrinking from the cold. With windchill on Sandy Hook Saturday where my brake went out, the temps were probably -20/-30, well below operating temp for hydros. Sram already sent me a brakeset for the ITI that I was supposed to be riding this whole time but the Guides are so god damn nice I've been holding off.

Your missing the main ingredient to making mechanicals super smooth with modulation. But naysayers always beat mechanicals down because they never used these, trust me these aren't the same as the $20 speed dials. They are priced at almost $200 for a reason. I didn't pay that much but hunted a long time for a good price. I have had them for 4 bikes now and not even sure you can still find them. Anyone who used them were super surprised. Can't wait to try them matched to the spykes I have ordered.

Seems like a lot of money to waste to have a brake that's 25% as good as the base model Sram Guide. I will literally run this mechanical for one day. Well actually, one day and all the days leading up to that day, but still, mechanicals suck no matter how much money you throw at them.

Well they they work for this fat guy perfect, as far as I'm concerned hydros are disposables. I haven't had the need for new brakes in like forever like most on this board. Only reason I am buying spykes is out of curiosity.
