Best band ever?

I agree. I just saw Jeff Tweedy(lead singer) solo in Burlington, VT. He's amazing. I'm obsessed on a man-crush level. 😉 Wilco just announced east coast tour dates but no info on when pre-sale begins. If you haven't seen them live it's a must.

orphan - I too have a man crush on Jeff Tweedy - you gotta get the Sunken Treasure - Live in the Pacific Northwest DVD (Tweedy solo live). also check on the web for downloads of jeff Tweedy "living room" concerts - some good stuff in there.

I have been obsessed with "Impossible Germany" since that CD came out. I seriously must have listened to it 1000 times. theres a great live version on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97IT0-EDTtw and on their Ashes of American Flags DVD which just came out. that is simply one of the best songs ever made. the guitar solo makes me f@#ckin' weep its so damn good!

I am a HUUUUUGE Wilco fan.

with that said, they are not one of the best rock bands ever (i.e., not up there with Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zep)

but they are the best rock band in the world right now...and that's something!

Best part about this thread is that it's all opinion. My opinion is that Wilco is the best band ever. I think he has more feeling behind his lyrics/songs then any of those bands you just mentioned. Oh and Nels Cline is the best guitarist ever. There's a reason I saw them 4 times live last year. <3

Ok, here's my Wilco story.

My wife is Taiwanese, now purely Americanized, but we do go back from time to time, and last year at this time we went back for 2 weeks. My wife and daughter stayed 2 more weeks and I went home by myself. The flight back is direct from Taipei to Newark, 14 hours. You leave on a Saturday evening and get back to Newark Saturday night. So to combat jetlag, the best idea is to stay up and then come back home and try to sleep.

Well I'm 12 hours into this flight, and I am stone cold toast. I am so beyond uncomfortable and bordering on miserable at this point. I played all the video games I could, starting the trip with a single game of Zuma that lasted 4+ hours, literaly. I was 1 or 2 boards away from winning the whole game. I had read, watched TV, played video games. And I was still 2 hours short and ready to lose my marbles.

So I checked out the music available. And much to my surprise, Blu Sky Blue is one of the options. Now you have to realize this is Eva Air, a Taiwanese airline. The fact that they had Wilco as one of the options was mind blowing. I put on my headphones and listened to it for an hour as we got ever so closer to Newark. It was such a sublime and welcomed experience that I still vividly remember that single hour that was over a year ago at this point. This coming from someone who barely remembers what he had for dinner the previous day.

Thanks for the youtube link. I wrote this while listening to it. Just moved on to California Stars, which I think MtbDawgJeff labelled "the quintessential Wilco song", which I totally agree with. I uploaded it to my cell phone to use as my alarm when I travel.

California Stars..."the quintessential Wilco song"

the sound of it sure (actually the music was a joint effort of Wilco and Billy Bragg ...but the lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie.

"Best part about this thread is that it's all opinion. My opinion is that Wilco is the best band ever." they are certainly my favorite band several years running. I saw them at the Count Basie in Red Bank and it was simply the best concert I've ever attended. ...and I found the audio of that show on-line so I get to re-live it as often as I wish!

Nothing better then finding a good recording of a show you went to. I got a really good recording of the Tower Theater show I went to last year and I can hear my buddy yell "we love you Jeff" clear as day when the place was dead silent. I don't know where you get your shows from but there's nothing better then http://bt.etree.org Tons of flac's.

Can't say that I love them but I do agree with the Beatles nomination.

Also agree with the importance of Floyd, Stones, and Led Zep.

Loved seeing some mentions of The Gratetful Dead. The Dead station on XM is always on in my vehicle. The whole Dead movement is something to be impressed about and you don't see it with any other band.

Maybe not the best band all around but Sabbath kicks ass.

Southernerinnj - Johnny Cash is in a class all his own - he's a best for me as well.

Dead Kennedys for best punk.

And add EPMD in there for best hiphop band.
