Best band ever?

"the ramones were important to the 70s punk movement" - yeah I understand that, I just think the praise they get nowadays totally outweighs their importance. plus musically, there were many punk bands that were so much BETTER musically. eg, The Jam (well they were "punkish" at least)

i could never name a 'best' - too much to choose from.

i saw phish a ton of times. my first show was in '92, but they lost me when they started attempting to be sappy and wrote the stuff like 'prince caspian'... pure vomit. so early phish i'm on board, later phish its 50/50 love it or hate it for me. but if i were to name my top 5 albums, i don't think phish would get listed. weird.

radiohead rules, as does pink floyd.

i gotta give it to the beatles - i have pretty much every album they have and they are regularly in the line up... but i prefer the later beatles versus the earlier stuff.

the chemical brothers - when i heard them i was pretty blown away. but again, it depends on where they were in their career, the early stuff has more quality to it than the later stuff IMHO.

been on a grunge kick lately and find a lot of soundgarden and nirvana getting into the line up. alice and chains gets an honorable mention just for the song 'again'.

janes addiction - i swear i used to listen to 'three days' every day my senior year.

james brown gets props for the funk and soul. the sex machine live album is just insane.

I dont have a favorite band. I like all of them. I think the main reason people listen to music is to change or better/worsen their mood. Music also keeps us from suffering of bordomness😀 Thats why Slipknot rules!

another over-rated band (and I know some may disagree) is the RAMONES. I just dont get the acclaim they receive. they made some fun punk/party songs that sound great when your 22 and drunk at 3am. am I missing some great relevance to this band? just seems that since most of the band is recently-dead everyone is heaping all of this praise on a relatively unimportant band. maybe its just me.
If we are judging a band's "importance" in part on their influence, understand that all of the significant UK punk bands, including the Pistols and the Clash, have testified to the fact that The Ramones laid out the blueprint for the movement. Everything I have seen/heard/read points to them being the most important band of all with regard to punk.

That being said, I am much more a fan of The Clash, The Jam, and especially Wire.

Chris G - youre probably right with regard to the Ramones. I am not up really up on the history of punk. not really my thing. so I'll shut up about the Ramones 😉

VH1 classic had a history of metal with interviews & countdown of the best/most important bands. In the end they chose GNR....I don;t necessarily agree. I think Sabbath was key to the birth of real metal...

Love Wilco right now. Sky Blue Sky is one of the best albums to come out in the last 5 years.

I agree. I just saw Jeff Tweedy(lead singer) solo in Burlington, VT. He's amazing. I'm obsessed on a man-crush level. 😉 Wilco just announced east coast tour dates but no info on when pre-sale begins. If you haven't seen them live it's a must.

Hmm...I thought that was the top 100 hard rock songs...and "Welcome To The Jungle" ended up on top.

Eh, bullsh!t none-the-less....

Saw that too. Different show, essentially same end result. maybe same folks involved in its creation? The rationale was even similar....basically they gave GNR credit for being the most original sounding band, true to themselves, combining influences of so many of the greatest that came before them, while modernizing the sound & dealing a death blow to all the 80's hair bands, and also launching the Seattle grunge sound somehow....

I think GNR had some great tunes, was an 80s hair band, and wasn;t even close to the best ever...
