Cathedral Pines

Wouldn't it just be OG, not OGG?

I would recommend nothing but solids on this ride. And call it a ride, not a race. I think it's better to think of it that way mentally. If you're going so hard that you need gels, you'll never make the 6 hour mark. Or if you do, having fun is not going to be a goal you accomplish.

You have the pit, pack it with food and drink. Make sure you drink enough. Even though it's cooler, you still sweat. If it helps, bring a couple of thermoses full of warm liquids. Bring a thermos full of coffee if it makes you drink. Whatever you do, make sure you eat and drink a lot.

Good luck everyone.

Yeah you can't look at this like a race, unless your vtc crew(9 laps :scared:.)

2 important notes to pay attention to when on the bike are your HR and cadence.

If you know your tempo pace with regard to heart rate, this is where you want to stay. Hitting lactic threshold is pushing it...going anaerobic is sure death.
John B. if you haven't trained much stay under tempo pace which would be aerobic pace.(just rideyourbike pace) The worst thing you can do is start out too hard, by the time you realize you went too hard its too late. Don't worry about DFL, the guys that go out too hard will win this prize.

Also pay attention to cadence. Avoid mashing gears, keep a spin of about 80 rpm going. Pushing a big gear will cause your leg muscles to work harder, you may be able to get away with this for 2-3hrs but to go the distance and avoid cramping don't mash...spin.

Now to wear my wind vest or bag it, Whip it off after 1 lap?

food

Last year Nick from Getaway Cycles in Bloomingdale hooked me up tight. Turns out he was a chemist or something smart like that in a previous life. His website has all kinds of nutritional info on it or just stop in and talk to him.

Basically cliff bars and blocks are all you would need. Half hour in, start eating a Cliff, next hour blocks with electrolytes, cliff bar. Just keep eating steady and blocking every 20-30 minutes.
When I was finished I was less tired than if I went out for a 3 hour ride around here.

I'm so glad I'm not doing this. My body is now conditioned for rides not longer than 45 minutes in duration. Good luck all.

John, no worries. We'll set our own pace. I want to do 6 laps in 6 hours. I'm not racing, I'm riding. I have learned my lesson at DH40. I went out too hard on first lap and didn't eat. On second lap I cramped badly and this wasn't fun at all🙁

Keep your stops to a bare minimum and keep them short. There is nothing harder than trying to get back on the bike after a 15 minute stop. You can get all the recovery you need by just slowing down and spinning easy for a few minutes. Set yourself a goal and KEEP it. No matter how bad you hurt you can always hurt some more. To paraphrase Ken from the LT100, "your better than you think you are". Oh yeah have fun. Make sure you stop by the VTC tent and rock out to the live music, I hear The Backstreet Boyz and Taylor Swift will be in da howz.

Taylor will be there handing out bottles (for WWJ), but we couldn't book the Backdoor boyz (poop!), so we brought in 98 degrees. It should be a good show.

Don't assume the course will be identical. The weather will be more cooperative this year, which will speed up lap times. Be sure to bring some cash with you as we will have Ibex beanies(with embroidered SWE log), alt. tee shirts and hoodies!! Looking forward to torturing you Joisey boys/girls!

Can you tell us how long the laps will be? I checked some GC files from last year and the avg. was around 9.5 mi. Is it approx. the same this year?

Thanks.

Maiden voyage for my new bike

I just got my new bike (Air 9) this afternoon. I could only do a 20 min. ride to make some basic adjustments but I already love it! Tomorrow I can't ride so I'll get really acquainted with it on Sat. :hmmm: I hope my butt likes the new saddle😀

Good luck everyone !!!!!!!
John , good to see you back !
Pampa congratulations on the new ride !

A mile down the road

awaiting the results:popcorn:

that was a great event. for an endurance race the course was perfect. nice and flat and fast.

race went exactly as planned. wanted to do 6 laps in 6 hours. basically maintained the same speed throughout. my midway split was 3 hours EXACTLY. and maintained that speed until...

a bigtime quad cramp with just 3 miles to go.

basically my thigh completely seized up out of nowhere. massaged it. downed two goos and and a bottle and discovered that I could keep the cramp at bay if I NEVER STOPPED PEDDLING. you dont realize how often you stop...even for a second or two to go around a turn or to go over a rough patch...but I had to KEEP PEDDLING. it was real conscious effort...I had to keep reminding myself (okay..actually I was talking to myself out loud "dont stop. keep pedaling. dont stop pedaling"). it worked and I didnt lose too much time.

(luckily I was by myself and no one heard me talking to myself constantly for the last 3 miles)

totally psyched to finish in 5:58:23 - six hours of riding/ 62 miles and I finished with just a minute and a half to spare to hit my goal.

totally made up for an overall very dissapointing race season.

I am one happy turtle.

Some guy pulled 9 laps in my Cat 2 30-39 group! 9 laps! As a mortal I dragged myself around the course for 7. A ton of fast guys out there today.
