Rei!!!!!!!!

Swung by the REI store tonight since I saw a full parking lot. Unfortunately it wasn't open to the general public. The guy at the front door told me they open tomorrow at 10AM to the public. Since I've never been to an REI I really want to look around. Hopefully I get a chance after work tomorrow.

Great store - similar to EMS...but I tend to like REI more...can't wait to see the new store!

i drove by it at some point this week heading to the office to pick something up. i'm pretty psyched for this to open right down the road from my office (i just wont be at my office for weeks now). REI has a good selection of climbing gear usually, but so does campmor and EMS...

I'm checking out the bikeshop see if I know anyone there. All their stores are top notch. Without a doubt, with newer items you pay more but if you're a member you do get that dividend back at the end of the year. Campmor is so tough to beat price wise though. If your a gear geek the store is simply drool heaven. Heading over shortly.

I just went to the REI. It's nice and big. I'm sure once they determine what people buy around here the inventory will change. You can also order online and pick up without paying shipping. This is gonna be dangerous. Its right around the corner from work.

Store is nice. Decent stuff. "Ok" bike dept. I wouldnt exactly call them a great microbrew bikeshop although a couple of guys came out to great me and they were all really nice. Probably from Seattle staying at the Holiday Inn is why. Its typical of all the REI stores. Pricing has always been my beef with REI however. I hate to say this but REI is a great store to go check out the latest and greatest jackets, fleece, tents, etc. However when it comes time to by I firmly believe your better off finding it online or simply hit Campmor. REI's pricing is pretty steep for clothing unless you buy REI brand jackets, etc. You can get the same Mtn Hardware stuff online at Backcountry.com or Moosejaw.com for a lot less & free shipping. Its nice to finally have them around but now that I just posted this who knows how long they'll financially stay around.

REI carries Novara bikes (sold exclusively at REI), including the Safari, an adventure touring bike nicely priced... I have generally liked the Novaras I have seen. I wouldn't compare REI to any LBS, but they carry a few decent bikes (including the Novaras).

Joining REI as a member and watching for specials is a good way to shop at REI. Their house brand stuff is very good quality, in my opinion.

Stop by. I'm in the shop

Aside from bike stuff REI also has XC ski equip. & tele stuff. Really good for trying on ski boots that are hard to find in NJ. This is important because like bike shoes you want to make sure you get a perfect fit.

Prices are a bit steep but the satisfaction policy is unbeatable: 100% satisfaction. I can't tell you how often an item feels great in the store but turns into a muscle wearying, cramp inducing, toxic trail gear I'd rather leave deep in the woods like shoes that feel great in a store but cramp my feet after an hour of pedal stomping. Most stores will not accept returns once the item is used or worn but I remember so fondly the sales staff at the Berkeley, CA REI telling me - "go ahead and try it on the trails and if you don't like it, return it." Magic to my ears and worth the extra penny.

Stopped in last night since I was driving by. I've been a member for about 12 years and had only been in a few of their stores. The folks were friendly and while they were not yet up to speed on everything, did everything they could to answer my questions. Eventually the store manager came over and answered my question. It was funny because at one point I was surrounded by like 6 or 7 employees. I wasn't pushing on my question, but they wanted to make sure they got me the right info. Of course I'm sure the store will be much busier once folks actually realize it's there.

My take has always been that they don't necessarily have the top of the top stuff and their prices aren't always the best, but the service and willingness to custom order stuff goes far beyond any possibly savings by going to a store like Crapmor.

I go to rei from time to time because they always have little hidden sale items. They don't have big glowing red signs, but if you look at the tag, they have the "was: $38495, now: $1838." I've scored some bike related items like tools and ortlieb bags that were marked down well below wholesale. I got a few pairs of thermafleece knee warmers that were like $1.99 a pair. Definitely worth the trip every few months for me. . .

Was related to required software for uploading maps to my garmin edge 705 from sites like gpsfiledepot. I have both the sd card for city nav and have downloaded the garmin topos but wasn't sure if I needed a mapsource dvd or not. Still not really sure.
