We spoke with a Legislative Assistant today and put in a request for a call back to get more info, and express our concern. We'll see if we get a reply and will keep you posted.

I wonder if our arguement is similar to those that were against the first steps to have motor vehicle, aeroplane and gun registration.

At one point these things were a non issue but now, would you like to have any of these systems completely absent with no substitute, just a free for all. As population density rises their must more for consideration to each other. If the gen pop will not do it voluntarily then laws will be enacted to coerce behavior.

Personally I feel if they cracked down on cell phone drivers and treated them as harshly as drunkdrivers, then the roads would be safer for all by a margin greater than could be possible with any 3 other measures. Insurance cost would eventually drop as well.

Agreed, but I would say that a general enforcement increase would be best. I see a lack of courtesy everywhere. 🙁

you need to change your address to an apartment or a friends in nj for a year(i think) after you sold the house, then you change your residing address to the one out of state.

This is mind boggling! I'm gonna start charging the state a tax for allowing me to pay all the stupid bs taxes and and fees.... At this point that's not so outlandish now is it? NJ, the joke state!

Don't forget that we have to pay sales tax on the purchase of a used car, how is that even legal?
BTW Rockscaler, guns aren't registered, purchasers and permits are. The state has no idea what guns I have but they know I'm allowed to buy them.

Just saw this quote on walkbikejersey blog:

I called Assemblyman Tucker's office (sponsor) and her admin stated that this legislation is a response to complaints from "seniors in her constituecy" who were victims of accidents w/cyclists (implied kids). I stated that there are most likely more cyclists killed in MV accidents than peds being hit by cyclsits yet the State does little to improve conditions for recreational/commuter cyclists.
I suggested that the local municipalities affected by these complaints should sort this out via ordinances and education and not incovneience all cyclists @ large.

well that could be a compromise, no license plate but a operating/owning license, although I dont know how you work this with children, but at the very least you wouldnt be penalized for multiple bikes.

This is still really stupid, but how would you appease the side that wants cyclists to be more accountable, this will definitely make it easier for a cyclist to be taken to court for injuring someone if they could be found at fault while riding.

This brings to mind of riding while drunk which is not a crime in NJ.

How does an old person getting run over by a kid on a bmx bike on a poorly lit street in Newark supposed to get a good look at the miniscule plate hanging from the seatpost? What makes them think the "punks" most likely causing the issue will register? Remember, most sidewalks are technically private property merely subject to state regulation and the MVC merely recommends that cyclists stay off sidewalks. Therefore, they may not need to register anyway.

One day, just once I would love to see a legislator use common sense or think something through logically.

Well its politics and for a lot of politicians, the name of the game is staying elected. Seniors vote and if a senior constituent has a big enough issue, if you want their vote, you're going to address that issue. This sounds more like posturing to me. I'll introduce this bill, make my constituents happy regardless of whether it passes or not.

Wow, yet another brilliant idea by clueless so called politician....I'm so ready to move out of this state.
