Le Tour!

So for those who know these things. Does Voekler not have any real chance at all? Every article is basically ignoring him as being pertinent at all. Is he just not a thread in the mountains?

No he doesn't. He is good for breakaway rides in the hills. He will likely have until Thursday. If he keeps it through Thursday, there is no way he will last through Saturday. He just ain't a high mountain kinda guy.

Thanks! So it sounds like it really is a 2 man race, well 3 if you count Contador, which of course he himself does:

Interesting, as I had not heard that Gamin-Cervelo was being blamed for the crash that took out Vino.

HCT, which Mr. Second-Place got popped for, is a masking agent used to disguise anabolic steroids. It's not an automatic ban, but Kolobnev's off Katusha now. Which means he's got to pay back twice this year's salary, according to the contract Tchmil made all his riders sign. That part of the contract was the reason Robbie McKewen and Gallopin' Gert Steegmans bailed for Radio Shack last year. It's never been tested in court. Should be fun to watch in the off-season.
I wish he had sprinkled it on his bagel. I always liked Kolobnev. Dumb as hell, but fun to watch. He won the first Monte Paschi Eroica I think. And his constant second places elsewhere made him pretty sympathetic. I'll go back to rooting for Marian Vos. Oh, wait, wrong race.

There are still a few dark horses that could so their faces in the mountains and don't count Contador out yet. The times we are seeing now really me nothing come Thursday. Contador did win the giro this year by almost 5 min due to the amount of climbing.

watching the recap segment right now. I still can't believe that one dude headbutted the other dude last year  and what is the significance of that stage winner this year that sucked on his thumb and signaled a belly or something 😕

looks like the gig is up for me in terms of watching at work--the feeds that works last week are blocked. it was good while it lasted....

Cartoons are the next best thing:

Every day that url changes, the number at the end goes up by 1. So tomorrow will be 429383, etc.

I know how it happens in a 4/5 race (most people are lazy) but how the hell do these breaks get away in a race like this? I have to imagine any one of the riders could track it down in a flash. They never show the start of the race - by the time you get to the action the break is away. Do they sort of let them go just to let them go? Because they all understand there are sponsors who want to be happy?

I just think the guys off the front arent contenders. They all seem to be a big amount of time back from the yellow.

Right? I mean since everyone is being talked to, everyone knows who is in the breakaway. I take it a decision is made on whether or not it is worth it to chase in the first week?

I am back online with the live feed, for some reason they took awhile to come up today.

Since Ben isn't too active for these explanation, I will give a feble attempt...

Most of the bigger teams put riders in a break because they want other teams in the peleton to do the work at the front because they know some teams cannot afford to let lose time. They never let GC contendors get away. The only place the QC guys go ahead is in the high mountains, but anything less than that, no way are they getting away from the peleton.

Other smaller teams that have riders in the break are looking for one day glory, wether it be that the rider in the break is from the area or really wants to win in the finishing town. As you noted, it also make sponsors happy and if you are in the break, you get a camera on a jersey with 5 guys instead of 175 guys.

Try podiumcafe.com. It's not streaming, but lots of informed commentary and screenshots. Next best thing.

(whoops, just read that you're back on. Consider PC a fallback option.)
