Iphone "other"

Im going to give the turn off and on music and photo syncing from itunes thing a try. Like i said before I did the restore thing with a brand new phone and the problem came back. The genius at apple said i should just start from scratch and don't restore which is probably going to be what I end up doing if this on/off sync thing doesn't work. Man, Im going to lose all my points on hungry shark.

cant you iphone types go to the istore thing and talk to the igeeks there to fix your igear? without that store support I see no reason for apple anything, but thats me.

Lol. I've been using apple computers exclusively for the last 15 years and I've never been to an apple store.

They are all too far away.

You drive by one everyday now at quakerbridge. Not that it is needed to go there...

so dont keep us in suspense .....what happened?

Ha. Since I posted Friday, I've been running around from one thing to the next and haven't had time yet.

There's an apple store at Quakerbridge? Since when? Man I haven't been to the mall in over a decade. And I don't drive by there every day but it isn't that far.

Since not that long ago. I guess you stay on 29, but it is in the realm of not out of the way now.

This will show you what's using all your storage. For me, my camera roll is 3G. You may have taken a video in those 345 pics that us eating up half your storage. It will list out all the apps and tell you what the pigs are, from biggest to smallest. Every app caches crap, so you can probably take them on 1 at a time. Some apps also store a shit ton of data, like if you have a language dictionary it may be a space hog. Etc etc, rinse & repeat, YMMV, void where prohibited.

OK So I tried ICloud for the first time. I turned off everything one by one and somehow 4.1 gigs is being used on iCloud. Even if the apps were turned on, it shouldn't come anywhere even close to 4.1. gigs

according to icloud, this is the contents of my phone:
Camera Roll - 504 MB
Tapatalk - 5.1 MB
Facebook - 2.2 MB
Google Maps 590 KB
Shazam - 582 KB
Instigram 9.3 KB
Music - NO DATA

What the hell is taking up 4.1 gigs?

back up you pictures and contacts

reset the phone to factory - where it needs to be plugged into itunes to recover it. do not recover/restore it. just load the apps you use again. watch what happens as you do it.

your contacts should come back from icloud when connected.

sounds like this area may have not have been put back into the free pool.

Why hasn't Luke posted this yet?

yeah, I did this twice already. the "other" data only grew because of it.

meh, at this point I'll just go to the apple store and see whats up.

what did the space look like with no apps loaded? this is a strange one - perhaps the memory was tomb stoned.

jailbreak it - and use the command line to find out what is going on.

on the other hand - a trip to the apple store is always entertaining.

Am I missing something here? Seriously? Did you do what I said? If you do a backup of your shit minus the apps and data (just settings) then wipe your phone, you have a blank slate with no 'other'. Then restore just your settings and you should again, have a clean slate now with your settings, no 'other'. Now update your phone, still should have no 'other'.

Da fuq am I missing?

Just go get one of these...

Yeah I started from a clean slate. Now the "other" data is even bigger.
Bill is having the same problem. He said the Apple store had no idea how to fix it and basically said " well that sucks"

(w)holy crap!

jatri this?

I had 12.4 gigs of other this morning. Restored from backup. No help. Then I deleted all my voicemails. No help. Then I unchecked most of my apps, and re synced. No help there. Then I went to an app called bigmail on my computer and deleted all the big messages on my gmail accts. No help. Other still 12.4 gigs. Then I deleted all my voice memos, no change. Finally I installed iExplorer and went looking at files on the phone and after a lot of experimenting I found, under the media tab, a very suspicious group of files called 'recordings'. These files were not associated with 'iTunes_control. There was a list of perhaps a hundred of these mysterious 'recordings' and each file size was precisely 400 kb. I took a big breath and deleted them. Guess what? Gone were 11 gigs of.....'other'....I still don't know what they were. Now I have 1.4 gigs of other and have also synced again just to check and it has not grown. So, no clue. Best guess is that they were voicemails from my Line2 app that remained even though I manually deleted them from within the app, like a trash folder. I'll be checking because I am curious to know, and will report back. Maybe.

Thats interesting.

I don't have any voicemails though. I purposely never set up my voicemail because I wouldn't listen to them anyway. In this day and age, voice mails are annoying - just send me a text.

iExplorer huh? I'll have to check that out.

that app has crummy reviews tho -

the apple people can browse the phone - i've seen them do it. they can also see what is running - in case something has taken over.

ask them is this how they plan the obsolescence of their product -
if he says it isn't supposed to work that way, then ask for a replacement, since it is obviously defective!
