Going Long and Hard.

My dear friend

You have serious issues; please keep it up.

Thank you.

Somewhat sincerely,

Not the management

Your right Iggy, see what happens when your not racing! Idle time is the work of the Devil 😀 God only knows whats next if he dont get back to the races?

Tuesday.

Not a ton going on today. Little sore and slow going this morning on my commute into work. Just a nice cruise over Washington Rock. When I got into the shop Lori said it looks like I've lost a good amount of weight. Sweet!! It's starting to work 😀

Another gluey day at the shop. You guys know the drill by now, I'm not posting anymore wheel rack pictures. Just go back a few pages, it looks like that. I still keep getting questions about my cross retirement. Yes, it's for real. Until I have the time to put in the hours needed to race competitively in the A's, or until I'm old enough to compete in one of the Master's classes, there's just no point.

Anyone want to buy some pre-glued wheelsets? I have a few. Like 8 pairs. I also have a pair of un-glued pre-stretched Limus tires. And, I also have a pair of un-completed wheels that are laced but not finished. May re-lace those with green nipples for my Seven to use at Battenkill. Who knows. Let me know if you're interested in anything cross related. I may have it.

I believe that may be all for today. Taking wednesday off. Sorta oldskool schedule. Wednesdays and fridays were my slow days.

-Jim.

Yeah I may be interested in some wheels. Maybe I'll swing by after work tomorrow or text you 48 times today.

Is Battenkill a target? I know I speak for a few people when I say I'd be interested to see you state a target before it comes and see how it plays out. Nobody knew Battenkill was important to you until much later.

I don't disagree with your cross decision. Your style tends to leave you open a bit to question though. It's either extreme all-in or extreme all-out. Thus the questions.

If you like I can make up a parable about a man climbing a mountain or making fruit salad or something. But Utah asked for one involving him beating Monte. I need to explain the difference between a parable and a fairy tale to him first.

Oh this Force stuff needs serious help. Is it going to be as simple as a bent hanger? Is it spelled hangar or hanger?

Hanger. And yes, I have 2 speeds, on/off. Go big or go home they say. If I'm not gonna hit the podium it's not worth doing IMO. Unless it's an MTB race for whatever reason, then I'm totally ok with just riding around and having fun. There's something about spending 4 hours in the car and 4 four hours at a CX venue to race for 60 minutes that makes me yearn for more than standing around in the cold with a waffle and a cowbell. I have Eggos here. And I have a cowbell. Then I get an extra 6 hours to ride my bike, seems like a no-brainer to me. :hmmm:

Battenkill is a target. It was not a target this year. I just wanted to race it and see what it was all about. Now I know, hence my not eating food anymore. Problem numero uno was going into that race too heavy. Numero two was not being prepared to go uphill that hard. Obviously those 2 things have much to do with each other as we all know.

Target events do keep your motivation going through a long season. I only had 1 this year, and I DNF'ed. My longer goal was to podium in the TT Cup, which I did. And of course make it through the year without breaking my shoulder, again. Next season I'll pick out a few events that I'd like to do better at and make a bigger push. My general theme has always been to just get my fitness up to a level where I don't need to peak for anything, and it's worked for me. This year I've had a hard time implementing that plan.

I agree with Norm. I don't like the word "retired" taking time off is more better🙂
If you are in fact over and done with Jim, I'll hold your VW for ransom till you change your mind.

totally understand where you're coming from on this one jim.

i love cross and had a blast doing it last year (and i'm having fun to a degree this year) but i'm 15lbs heavier than i was expecting AND i lost five months of my year b/c of my stupid ankle. if it weren't for the fact that i love riding my damn fisher around in circles on the grass i'd throw in the towel, start squatting again and say "SSaP here i come".

edit: part of the reason i'm 15lbs heavier is b/c i refuse to stop going to the gym. this i know.

Yeah. Thruth is, I'm fairly sure I try to be competitive in too many different disciplines. Training for MTB and TTs are very different than crits and CX. I don't make the transfer from one to the other very well. The MTB and TT stuff comes to me very naturally, all I do is ride my bike and commute into work and I can stand on the podium every weekend (except this year 😱). Very little structure, a lot of dicking around, etc...Cross OTOH is a HUGE amount of effort, I don't think there's a single fast-twitch muscle in my body.

Having big TT and MTB power on it's own can get you pretty far in cross, but to hang with the specialists, you need to really devote the time to develop that skill set. I may not be willing to become one of those guys. I'd much rather spend my time becoming better at the things I'm already pretty good at and see where that gets me. I know I'll have more success focusing on less things.

So rough goals. Weight back down to where it needs to be. Maintain same power. TT win in the P1/2/3. Be ready for Battenkill. DH40 podium. The rest we'll play by ear.

Dibs on the stretched LIMUS tires! If dibs have not been called.

Hide them under your bench or something so ppl dont go wild for them.😀

What is good for others may not be good for all.
Meaning, when I saw that NJCX Cup changed to 40+ and 50+ I was like ... "now this is a good idea" but now I see the other side. Dropping the 35+ 1-4 puts the 35-39 men in a tough spot.

Wednesday.

Recovery day. No bike. Although looking at the weather I should've done this tomorrow. Poop!! I had to get the barriers to the shop though so, blah. It's only rain.

Food. I don't like posting food or too much about my diet because it would seem everything I eat is wrong. Something I find to be tasty and healthy I usually find is bad. Sandy for example doesn't eat carrots because they're bad for you. Norm doesn't eat Chobani because it's like ice cream. FFT lives off Chobani and not ice cream. I think everyone would say carrots or celery is good for you? No red meat is good. Well, for me it's not an option so it doesn't matter what anyone thinks.

Simple fact is. I've lost over 85 pounds at one point. I've lost 11 pounds since Hillbilly, so something I'm doing here is working. I don't confess to know which part of it specifically, but as a whole, it's working. We've all seen pictures of my lunches...I feel they're good. They're healthy. They don't have a lot of calories.

This meal is under 300 calories, has less than 5grams of fat, and 22grams of protein. I'm sure there are many other things I need to look at which at this point I don't.

Breakfast has been an easy one as well. Maybe not the best, but it works with my schedule, and if I need to be on the bike first thing, it some with me.

I get the little ones. During race season I'll eat the bigger one or Met-RX morning of. These days the little 190 calorie version does the trick. Easy.

Normally I will eat some sort of fruit between breakfast and lunch. If I hate myself that day and feel fat, I just suck it up and starve :drooling:

Around 4 I have some other snack. I keep the little 100 calorie single serving greek yogurts around. If I ride longer than just commuting, I'll hit something more substantial. Like pretzels. Haven't had candy in about a month, I'm going through Swedish Fish withdrawal...

Dinner has been a bigger version of my lunch. I'm vegetarian so I normally eat 2 kinds of veggies or a big salad with some sort of "faux meat" dish. Like tonight we had veggie burgers.

I keep grapes and other fruit around for dessert. I also keep popcorn in case I get the crunchies.

For me this stuff works and is easy to keep track of. The average over the past 3+ weeks has been 1500 calories, sans bike. The bike side is something entirely different. I've been using a modified version of my separation of church and state theme. Days on the bike under 2 hours I take in no extra calories on the bike other than HEED in the bottles. I may eat breakfast on the bike, but there's no additional food. Anything longer works out to about 500 calories per hour.

I ordered Allen Lim's new book to get a better idea of what I should actually be doing and then I'll make adjustments but overall my diet gets better little by little and at some point I may have an idea of what's right. To get me down to race weight, this will work, then we'll dial in the long-term...

They've not been claimed yet. They're at my house still on the stretching rims, ready to rock!!
