Gears.
I've now mentally prepared myself to install gears on my bike. I had a good talk with Charly, (who won Tuscobia last year) and given the variable conditions, gears would be a good idea. It took him over 20 hours, riding in his lowest gear, with his tires deflated to 2 psi. Second place finished 6 hours behind him. While I'd love to pull the macho card and say I'll be fine on the SS, 80% of the field DNF'd last year before the turn-around. I don't want to be one of those guys. So, gears.
D&L.
We are making good progress on our race. We spent a bunch of time cleaning, de-rusting, and clear coating the finishers' awards.
They came out pretty cool. Now we have to write something on them.
Selene gave us a little shout out in Bicycling, which is awesome!!
"I have this
beautiful blue bomber from Felt to test out as I train for what might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever done (and I’ve done some dumb things):
The D&L Fat Epic. It’s a 125-mile race along tow and canal paths next month. I’ve done this route on a road bike with 23C tires. But for this (mis)adventure, only
fat bikes are allowed because, well, fat bikes!"
