It's kewl, dude.

Wait, is "dude" uncool? Crap I guess I blew my cover with that question.

Nope, it was the "kewl" 😛

In reality, QFT is probably more ubergeek than cool, I picked it up on Anandtech several years ago.

I do my first night lap at Allamuchy with a cotton Motorhead shirt. When it gets wet ( within 2 minutes, usually), it gets heavy and starts to hang and stretch. It will also chaffe you where it rubs your skin.

I was in Lake Placid, NY for the Ironman last year (watching) & at the end of the event, in the dark, one of the stragglers came running into town with a wet cotton shirt all droopy & wet from on/off rain throughout the day.....and two big fat red stripes of blood all the way down it from where it had rubbed his nipples to where they were just bleeding & bleeding. Was disgusting!!

That said, I wear baggy Oakley shorts with a chamois liner built right in, and a loose jersey, although not opposed to a tight jersey, I am nowhere near ready to ride in just spandex shorts or pants.

I'm just curious. You folks with spandexophobia, do you primarily have issues with your body image, or do you just think they look bad on anyone?

There's lots of us here (myself included) that wear the tight lycra and our flabby bits are more noticeable. It's a bit of a neccecary evil of our sport. When we're done riding we can't wait to get out of our faggy ballerina outfits.
You've got to perfect the parking lot quick-change to street clothes.
BTW it always amazes me that we don't hear about any one getting busted for public nudity when getting changed.

Thats funny I started wearing spandex biking shorts and my wife seems to like riding behind me staring at my ass. She says it looks good in spandex. 😎

I think the baggies are retarded, who ever wheres them cant be that strong of a rider, or they are really over weight, and as we all know, that is not a good look either..so boys, lose the weight and get in shape.

my riding gear of choice are fox undershorts with a chamois with some dickies shorts over them. a previous post asked why i wear baggies over them and reason being is that they are made to be the base layer only. i alternate between two jerseys; an old schwinn replica jersey (race cut) and a loose fox racing jersey. up until a year ago, the sight of me in lycra would make ME sick, but now i'm in much better shape so going full-on lycra wouldn't be so bad. that's why i asked if it's better to race in that stuff, but from what i have read from you guys, it's better to be comfortable than to look cool.

Look cool? C'mon now.

I can't imagine not racing in anything but full faggy-faggy matchy-matchy whatever-whatever gear. It's not about form, but function. You'll get anything baggy stuck on your saddle when you're getting out of the saddle. And loose jersey is not going to function well nor do much good if you have stuff in the pockets and it's as big as a dress. I never ride in anything but lycra at this stage, race or notAs for how I look - man I couldn't care less what people think of my look. I sure as hell ain't going to be on the cover of GQ anytime soon.

it's better to be comfortable than to look cool.

it all depends what your definition of looking cool is. If you wear baggies at a race you might not look cool to other racers, but you would fit in with the down hill hounds.
Guys who race on road bikes all shave there legs to look cool.
Sometimes looking cool is more comfortable grasshopper.😎

I might decide to ditch the baggies, but I'll never shave my legs. if i don't belong to a team or have a sponsor to provide a kit, are black shorts my only option? i know nothing about this.

No silly uniform requirements on the mountain bike. You can wear whatever you want. I'm pretty sure you can wear ass pants if you so desire.

News anchors could probably get away without wearing any pants at all. It doesn't mean they should.

c'mon Nick you are overthinking this....it is only your first season, go out there in whatever you feel comfortable. No need to go spending $$$ on a whole spandex wardrobe or matchy matchy outfits. If you wanna do baggies, dickies or naked is fine. I believe the main point here is to have fun. Don't listen to what ur friends are telling you, especially if they ride a GOLDEN bike

After a few seasons and seeing how you place then you can spend time thinking about how to cut off seconds off your time. Then you can even wear a silly helmet like this one....😛

Listen to the advice of your friends...

Don't wear that silly helmet and DON'T wear a bib thong.

True in some cases, but we are better spellers.😛
