Cycling attire

So, I haven't been into longer-distance riding or competitive cycling until this year and I have never succombed to purchasing spandex gear. My friends have busted my balls because I dress like a "freerider" when they're donning their kits. I really couldn't give a turkey what I look like as long as I'm comfortable. But with my first race season approaching, I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting a race-cut jersey and some shorts. I usually wear loose-fitting jerseys and padded cycling shorts under my baggies. Does anyone else out there embrace the "freerider" look? Or am I gonna look like a kook?

I'd say wear what you find comfortable... but why wear baggie shorts over your padded cycling shorts. Spandex cycling shorts have a wicking action to pull moisture away from you skin and stay dryer. Putting another layer over this seems like it defeats this purpose.
As far as jerseys if you think a jersey will make you faster then it probably will. The tighter race cut will be less likely to catch a tree branch but thats about it.
feel good ride good

Im new to racing also.
Im going to ware a tight COTTON shirt. (I know its not good to ride in cotton, but I like to break rules😛) Biker shorts underneath my baggy freerider looking shorts. 😎

There are many options for riding comfortably that do not require looking like you are in your underwear.

I don't want to see myself in spandex to heck if I want others seeing me in it. So yeah, I ride with pearl izumi riding shorts, but then put on loose swish pants on colder days or my really old Fox Racing shorts that actually have another chamois in them. Loose fox jersey over spandex tight jersey.

As I get fitter might drop the over clothes but probably not.

i said the same thing. granted, i don't do the spandex shorts, but i wear a road jersey all the time. the ONLY time i wore a full kit was at the KVSP race and that was purely for PR purposes. it wasn't like it was going to make me faster or anything..

I do my first night lap at Allamuchy with a cotton Motorhead shirt. When it gets wet ( within 2 minutes, usually), it gets heavy and starts to hang and stretch. It will also chaffe you where it rubs your skin.
Function before fashion! All you spandex bashers trying to look Cool. Fact is you're all too old for cool......
Wicking fabrics on jerseys, and bibs, make it comfortable to ride....and ride long, if you' re into that sort of thing.

I haven't done any rides over 2 hrs, so maybe I'll pay for this when I do....but I wear boxers w/ mesh shorts and I haven't had a problem yet. I bought a pair of spandex shorts and put them on when I got home. I barely got them pulled up all the way before I knew that feeling wasn't for me.
