rear derailure adjustment

ok-- so i'm pretty new to mtb. raced bmx for 25ish years, but just started mtb very recentlly.

i need help with this whole "gears" thing. lol. after all this time on a single speed bmx, gears and derailures are new to me.

i've got issues with two bikes, we'll start with one and see if i can figure out the other.

i friend of mine that rode for trek gave me a bruiser2 that he built. he is a trials rider, so it has a single 22t cw in the front, it has 11-26(i think) in teh rear. an old looking shimano deore in the back.

it doesn't shift all the way up to the granny gear, and if you are in the middle gears and try to pedal hard, it will pop down to the next chainring in the back.

also, the shifting itself is a little meh, do these trigger style shifters just get old inside after a while, doesn't really look like it's servicable

thanks
dave

ps-- as always, on a budget, so staying out of the shop is ideal.

Does that advice include that advice?

You'll have a hard time servicing the shifter itself... and taking it to a shop would be costly. At that point, you're probably better off buying a new one. Sometimes if a shifter is missing shifts, you can clean it out with some crc spray or something along those lines... I usually use an aerosol bike specific lbe, but WD40 or CRC should have the same effect. Sprey it in there and soak the thing. run it through some shifts to break up any gunk that may be in there.

To get up into the largest rear cog, There's two things to check... The derailleur hanger could be bent or the limit screw may need adjustment. If the derailleur hanger is bent, you can try to bend it back by gently pulling on the derailleur. Most likely though, its the limit screw... There will be two small screws on the rear derailleur that limit how far in either direction the derailleur will travel.

Ghost shifting on a hard tail, I'm not so sure what would cause this.

You probably need new cables too, which will make a big difference in shifting performance.

Aside from the places to look suggested so far. also be aware that when the rear derailur hanger bends it can lead to ghost shifting and incomplete shifts.

to rebuild a shifter your lookin at $15 and $8 to adjust the gears. so 23 bucks and 5 minutes of my time or hours of head scratching and frustration. And rather then have everyone guessing i can tell you whats wrong by just taking a quick look at it. With the symptoms you have correct cable tension, a properly aligned hanger, and check for some chain stretch are all possible fixes. If you are trying to keep it out of the shop the best of luck to you but if you decide you would like some help we're here everyday.
