Backpack/Hydration Reccomendations

I have the blowfish. I like it but its too much pack for long summer rides.

I have this-

It's incredible. Even though it's big it seems to disappear while riding. I have never not had enough room in this thing. That being said, I do think it may be a bit much for the summer. I have an older MULE, probably 6 years old now that I use on road rides. It has served me well and the new ones can only be better.

I dont think im ever going to use my pack again. I have 2 water bottles and I carry everything else in my pockets.

I've got a older Mule, 100oz bladder and more than enough space for extra tubes, pump and tools.

DaKine.

I'm running an older Nomad pack and like how it fits and holds stuff. The latest version of it looks even better.

But I've always wanted one of these bears:

I wonder if I could substitute the lobers for my Wolverine long handle flat nose? :hmmm:

I've got a classic, lobo, and a HAWG. HAWG for the winter to carry extra layers when I start taking them off. I decided to ditch the under seat bag since my OCD explodes when things are gingling on my bike.

That will change after you stab your self with a multi tool.
If you don't want to use a backpack, go for a under the seat bag for tool. Its totally unsafe to carry tools in your pockets. Unless you never crash.

You can get Jansport Diablo on closeout, I'd be cheaper than a Camelback discount and quality is just as good plus it has a better bladder system. It has a first generation Nalgene bladder which isn't quite as good as the current 3rd generation CXC (no magnet bite valve mount, different tube routing, slightly smaller opening) but its only $25 for the bag and the bladder (or $40 if you don't want the light blue color they are selling at WS in the link below instead - moabsports).

I have the same pack and have been using it for about 6 years now - its my favorite and I've tried tons of them. Pack is still working great (other than a blood stain on the straps from a mtb accident) and I actually have another unused spare I bought on clearance a few years ago for $40 since I like it so much. It fits a multitool, a few hangers, a shock pump, a tire pump, 2-person first aid kit, rain breaker, food, camera, keys, wallet, cellphone, 100 oz quick disconnect bladder, and spare tube. Its wide on the bottom and distributes the weight over your waist rather than up high like most other brands (like Camelback)

These are some of the various models I've had - 2004 Jansport Diablo is top center in Blue (not pictured but also Dakine, Northface, Ultimate Directions, K2, Platypus, Gregory, and maybe one or two others over past few decades):

No problem, looks like they are sold out at $25 but still a good deal at $40 and you have more color choices. I'm sure most people realize this by now but its best to keep the bladders in the freezer after a ride to prevent/slow bacteria growth. Make sure they are relatively dry and there isn't too much water left in the bladder it as the ice can lead to a temporary leaky seal when you screw the top back on with ice on the mouth/cap of the bladder. Best to let the bladder thaw out for 15-20 minutes before you fill it to prevent that. Its also best to leave sugary sports drinks out bladders to prevent bacteria growth. Instead you can use some sugar free dissolving electrolyte tabs (think alkaseltzer but also available in powder or pill form) and use gel or energy bars instead if you are doing a longer ride.

You can buy very small bottle brushes made for hydration bladder cleaning on a long line for cleaning out drinking tubes and mouthpiece. Its a challenge to get the softer plastics like the mouthpieces clean if you've let the bacteria go wild for too long😱

Riding in low temps until your hydration starts solidifying ==> HARD CORE 🙂

A long sleeve shirt, Yes...

Im not sure about a fleece. I always thought a fleece would be way too warm to wear riding.... ( even in the temps that make the hydration hose freeze up on me)...
