Yellow Loop

Does anyone know approximately how many miles the yellow loop is? I am a beginner and will be attempting to ride the Yellow loop at Lewis Morris sometime next week. Since I am new to riding my stamina still needs some work, especially on the uphills. Just trying to get a guage on the distance to prepare myself for the exhaustion lol

Maybe 5? You should be able to walk it casually in less than 2 hours. So there's some gauge of what to expect, worst case.

It's about 5, maybe 5.5 depending on exactly which route you take.

I usually ride the yellow loop clockwise around the lake. Starting past the ball field and picnic area (on my right).

EDIT: When you heading out there? I'm thinking about going tomorrow 7/11 after lunch and I'll be back out after work one day next week

according to my gps it was 4.1 miles...i still think it's closer to 5...at least in my mind.

Looks like the distance wont be too much a problem for me. How tough are the uphill climbs? Those may be my downfall

if you are a beginner there will be a few that will hurt. but at least they aren't for very long. just remember the payoff is the downhill after the uphill climb. i think you will have a great time!

Everyone keeps telling me that too, but I don't see the payoff. Climb for minutes to decend for seconds. :hmmm:

Thanks for all the info guys. Looking forward to testing myself. At the age of 37, I have always kept myself in pretty good shape over the years, but mountain biking has made me quickly realize In not in the shape I thought I was in.

Do clipless pedals make a huge difference when climbing and riding long distances? The stock pedals on my Rockhopper stink. I intend to get some clipless pedals and shoes in the next week or two. Hopefully that will help me with the difficulty I am having riding uphill

You must pay to play. In mtbing that means climbing for however long to get those blissful few seconds of descent.

Plus, the more you climb the stronger and faster you will become.

Well I finally rode the yellow loop today. Was tougher than I had expected. The hills kicked my butt. Had to walk the bike a little more than I had hoped which wasnt fun since my quads were burning. I was very tired a little over halfway through and had to stop for a few minutes. Got my second wind and slowly made it back, but it was tough.

Yeah, it's a lung burner. It will get easier, and eventually, you'll be able to run the whole loop with out any hike-n-bike.

I take several breaks. Going clockwise around the lake:
Top of the 3rd climb (yeah...that one)
When I hit the other parking lot
Both wooden benches after the parking lot

After riding the yellow for a while, try the race route. (mix of yellow, orange, and other bits) Adds some more distance and singletrack in place of the fire road stuff. I'm usually there on thursdays after work with the Marty's "beginner" group in case you need a guide.

Where exactly does that group meet up. I was there last Thursday and didn't see anyone (I'll freely admit, that I didn't get there until after 6:20). Which parking lot?

I don't know if there was a ride last week - it wasn't posted on the Marty's website/forum. BIll, who runs the ride, usually posts by 3pm on Thursday. You can check it out from Marty's website/Yahoo Groups.

The ride meets around 6:15 at the parking lot for Sunrise Lake. Its a great ride!

Last week we left at 6:35/6:40. Bill has been posting cancellations only. If the weather holds, I'll be there tonight. I usually park down by the road and ride up to the lot. (blue land rover).

I hope to be there too (fingers crossed for good weather).

Head to the lot on the left as you are approaching the lake - the lower lot. We usually park near the paved entrance/road to the pavillion. If the weather holds, I have a blue CR-V.
