Definitely missed out on Dave's bike, would have been a good option at a good price. I'll continue to troll the forum and craigslist.
 
If you could come up with a couple of more bills I've got a Giant XTC 29er-1 for you.
 
+1 Giant Talon in a great entry level 29er in your price range...may not stand up to prolonged abuse, but it will get you out on the trail...
 
Was hoping to get something used so that I can get something better for the same price as a new one. But always appreciate the input.
 
My 2010 Giant XTC 29er 1 is a medium but is a bit more than what you're looking to spend. It's pretty much stock but I've swapped out the squeeky Avid Juicy 3 with Shimanos so problem solved. I've also replaced the stock Giant seatpost with a Thomson seatpost with setback and replaced the stock grips with Ergons with built in barends. The picture doesn't show the Thomson seatpost but it is included.

He liked it for a week and then I took it over. He's sticking to the road. With multiple knee surgeries and back pain, he thinks it will be time to even hang the road shoes too.
