Where does your fish come from?

Moral of the story....make sure it's wild caught? All of what they're saying seems to related to farmed fish.

Not sure bout tuna. It is not just the raising but handling concerns as well. Has anyone tried trader joes frozen fish?

dont want to bum people out, but the same can be said about fruits and vegatables from other countries. there is no fda regulation in these countries...who knows what pesticides are being used.

Tuna tends to bioaccumulate mercury.

EPA recommends 1 can every 9 days max for white albacore...3days for chunk light.

Being somewhat involved in the food industry, I see how half this stuff is handled once it gets to the stores/restaraunts. If people knew how all this stuff is shipped, stored, and prepped, most of us would starve.

The problem is most people only care about the price and not quality (why would anyone buy anything from Walmart) and don't understand you get what you pay for...always.

Though im sure the mtbnj community understands this, since we don't advocate running your department store bike through allaire

Well, this applies almost to all imported stuff. For instance, imported wine contains a lot of preservatives. This is a terrible world.

The Shop Rite in Hoboken always labels their fish with country of origin and whether it is farmed or ocean caught. I had always picked ocean caught because of worries about too much mercury and other chemicals, especially salmon.

Tip: If you like salmon, you'll notice the majority of salmon is farm raised which typically has much much higher mercury levels. Especially bad for pregnant women. However, there is a fish called Steelhead trout. It looks just like Salmon and tastes like salmon (actually I much prefer it). However, Steelhead is almost always wild caught (in the Columbia river in Washington and the Pacific) and it is cheaper. It tastes better too IMO.

Yeah, not the best stuff in the world.

Stats on pesticides and caner rates - there really is no significant statistical correlation between pesticides and cancer. Or there is some debate on it. Either way, it is extremely low, if it exists at all.

Contrast that with the cancer rate descrease for people who eat fruits & vegetables of any kinds, and without a doubt you're better off eating fruits & veggies treated with pesticides than not eating fruits & veggies at all.

I like this because chunk light is cheaper. 🙂

I always ask if the fish is farm or wild. I know most times the waiter/waitress is going to say wild knowing full well it is farmed.

In the store I only go for wild fresh from American waters, rarely do I get bottom feeders.

I don't eat shrimp, but comparing the Asian basin shrimp farmers to oil soaked Gulf shrimp, I'd prefer the oil soaked.

Also just found out the processed meat can now contain "pink" meat- stuff that was usually reserved for animal feed. One more reason to go out and catch/kill your own dinner. You can feel somewhat safer knowing where and when it came from.
