Deity stem/bar..$170
Grips..TBD
Post..Thomson dropper..$275(ebay)
Saddle..TBD
Crank w/bb..Zee..$140
Wolf Tooth 30t..$75
Cassette..XT..$85
Chain..HG74..$45
RD..SLX..$80
Disc Brakes..SLX..$260

I'm not too fond of the Crank,RD and Brakes. My current bike has XT components, no I'm not an super experienced rider just started riding last year. Trying to make some changes and hopefully get a little better components..I think. Feel free to make advice, changes or point me in another direction. No race stuff substitutions please, will do more than 1 race this year

Are you just looking for feed back on your build? Slx rd and brakes aren't bad for a trail bike. I generally assume I'm going to destroy any rd I put on so I only buy slx, its cheap and works well.

Whats up man? I met you in the CR parking lot after Saturday's ride.

I think you're in a weird spot here. I looked at those Niner ROS9 frames for a long time. I'm intrigued by a trail bike / hard tail, but I couldn't get over the weight issue. That frame is over 7LBs!
This frame with those all mountain/ DH components, its going to be weigh north of 30 lbs. This kind of defeats the purpose of a hardtail in my opinion. (especially when I think you were riding a trigger? 😉 )

I think you can keep the dropper post, they're one of the best upgrades you can do if you're riding a lot of technical stuff. That frame would shine built up with light components. Brakes, cranks, wheels, rear derailleur, all that. and go 1 by 10. (No front derailleur). Make it a XC type of bike that can handle a lot of gnarly stuff when you come across it.

I know what I'm saying is all pretty expensive, but you have time to swap stuff out through ebay/pinkbike/etc.

If you're open to another opinion, you can grab some of the stuff cheaper at Jenson USA, who has free shipping over $50. Sorry if we are not allowed to post link here.
- The XT Cassette is $62.99

- SLX Shadow plus RDR with clutch $64.99 (assuming you want a clutch, of not there are may options)
http://www.jensonusa.com/Rear-Derailleurs/Shimano-SLX-M675-Rear-Derailleur
- KMC X10.93 (I prefer KMC chains since they have a replaceable master link) $28.00

They also have some good deals on Shimano brakes, SLX is a great choice.

Lastly, the upgrade that I think you would really notice is changing from a Zee shifter (functionally the same as SLX) and going to an XT M780 (or Saint M820). Jenson does not have the individual one listed as I write this, but they are on ebay and other vendors like Universal Cycles for approx. $70.

Go for the XT brakes.

Having ridden XT and SLX back to back, there is no comparison. Ice tech rotors are the real deal. I use them on Magura brakes in fact.

I wish I understood that bike. I have a ton of bikes. That one isn't close to being on my wish list.

Glad to see that there is still a bike out there for every taste though.

Enjoy.

Not a bad list but I'd swap out the Zee parts for lighter stuff. SLX brakes with ice tech rotors should be pretty nice. I have XT brakes on my Misfit and SLX on my Jet 9. Yes there's a difference but I'd upgrade your RD, cranks and shifter 1st. I have SLX cranks on both bikes and am very happy. I'd go SLX cranks and XT RD and shifter and leave the brakes alone.

To Jshort, after seeing your bike Saturday got me to thinking..do I want another 30lb bike? No I don't. Due to my weight, LBS and forums seem to only suggest steel due to my weight. Don't know if you remember my giant friend but he rides like a little guy hard and fast and hasn't broke anything on his bikes. With all that being said, lighter frame or complete bike wanted. If I still decide on doing myself yes XT or maybe even some XTR stuff(Jdog, Mike P). I really like to accomplish the climbs on the trails that we ride, I'm a little better climber than my friends..they're better with speed and agility so I gotta catch them on the hills. Gathering all my info through various sites and forums, I want to do the build myself..giving myself until May if all goes well. But thanks for input and info thus far

What kinda size we talking about? I know 250-290 lb guys who ride aluminum like they stole it. Just have to find the right frame. They have more problems with wheels and seat posts.

I mean at 265 you definitely can find aluminum frames, but a sub 30lb bike might not be something to strive for. My brother is that big and he rides pretty fast on an intense and it's holding up fine and that bike is like 10 years old ( holding up fine for being 10 years old with a big dude on it). But he makes a conscious effort not to break it (rides smoother instead of just smash and hammer). Maintenance is a big thing too, you can run slightly lighter stuff as long as you keep your bolts and spokes tight.

I can't imagine my Paradox frame breaking, it's pretty damn burly and Jenson lists it at 4.72lbs. I never got the chance to weigh mine before I built it, but the whole bike is right at 26lbs with pedals.
Quick list of build:
XT brakes, SLX rotors.
SLX crankset and shifter, 1x10 with XT RD and cassette.
Stans Arch EX (you might want Flows)
Manitou Tower Pro 120mm
Thompson stem and post, 710mm bars.

very similar to the build of Misfit, Reba fork instead of Manitou.
