Vermont 50

I'll be there. I'm not sure that a light is needed, I've done the race 7 or 8 times and I don't recall many pfolks using lights at the start. Just follow the pack for the first 2.5 miles and get up the first climb and you'll be fine.

I've done it before too- depending on cloud cover, rain/fog, etc. it can be sketchy- this year my group leaves at 6:05 am- 10 min earlier than last year. It will be DARK at that time- especially for the first section in the woods.

Also, I noticed that light & motion is a sponsor this year.

I would recommend a small (less than $20) headlight that you won't worry about losing. With the earlier start this year it will be sketchy on the road to the trail. Three years ago, it was extremely cold and dark. The last two years have been more mild due to rain and slightly lighter. I've never used a light but would this year.

I bailed on the race this year after suffering through the mud the last two years, especially last year. I DNFd after 20 miles. Of course, the weather forecast is perfect when I don't sign up. Good luck and have a great time.

Ya- last year was brutal. 40s, dark, and rain at the 6:15 start. The downhill section on the road was really nasty due to the dark and road spray (plus, mountain bikers can't ride in a pack to save their lives). When we got into the woods, I remember just trying to follow someone and praying they were on the good line. Slamming into rocks on a rigid at full speed sucks. This year, I will bring the light- maybe even the magicshine- a few ounces in weight for the ability to see- not a bad trade off.

It was spectacular.Perfect weather, conditions were ideal and the foliage was downright trippy. This was the first year that I never get off my bike for the whole race, i flew through the aid stations and managed to climb every hill. Even the 25 minute wait in the beer line at the end of the was pleasant.

9967' of gain in 49.7' miles, long sections of tight twisty singletrack, snowmobile trails, VT dirt roads and hellacious climbs on dirt, gravel, in meadows and singletrack. All in all my favorite course this year.

That's because you didn't race Ohio 😉

I was happy with my race- 137th overall, 18th in singlespeed class at 5:20:48 was over 90 min faster than last year. Hellacious climbs, fun singletrack with a new technical section that was pretty cool. Not sure I'll do it fully rigid again though. On of these years I'd like to try for a sub-5:00 race.

I've been trying for a sub 5hr now for 8 or 9 years and my best was in either '06 or '07 which was a 5:02. This year I missed it by 59 frigin' seconds. Basically if I went 1.2 seconds a mile I would have broken 5 hours. Oh well there's always next year.
