Tire combinations for rocky North Jersey

whats the smallest tire I could run on my raceface AR40 rims though? I was assuming 2.8 was probably the smallest???

good question.

i liked the confidence building look of the wide tire. So I stuck with 2.8. Iggy is really fast. I’m trying to stay on the bike. So two different views.

Jim will smile when I show up with 5” minions on the fatbike. Z

Let’s not forget the geometry of the bike, as usually the 27.5+ are alternative to a 29 wheel/tire setup. That would also make preferable to stick with a 27.5+ tire as I don’t think the OP wants to change wheels.

that said, last summer I used 2.8 exo+ rekons on my el mariachi and I was very happy with how they rode on a full rigid setup. Also, I used them exclusively in Ringwood an Wayway. Can’t speak for durability or wet conditions as I rarely ride...not putting down that much torque either.

Don't be a weight weenie. If you're not racing or trying to slay those Hillclimb KOM's get something with beef if want security and durability. Maxxis DHF/DHR EXO 2.5 is a great combo. I'm currently running the Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35 Rear, Magic Mary 2.6 Front (both Super Trail version). I've had no issues with sidewalls and grip is fantastic. I like the narrower rear but still a little beef and keep rolling resistance a little lower. Also, throw some Tanis or CushCore inserts in there. You can run lower pressures, get more grip and save your rims in the gnar. (I have both - Tanis for the trail bike and CushCore for the park bike).

i tried the hans dampf on the front, its definitely not something i would recommend, but on the rear its a great tire. granted i only get 500-600 miles out of it on the rear, (the front goes closer to 1k). I had a Nobby Nic on there, i still prefer the mary on the front.
Will look into Magic Mary. I thought that was an xc tire for some reason. Thanks

Magic Mary's offer tons of traction on pretty much any surface. They don't roll super well, but that's not what you're looking for if you're running a tire like that. Had a pair of them on my former park/freeride bike, and had no complaints for that application.

I recently installed CushCore on my trail bike, both front and rear. Love the performance but the weight is a bit of a penalty. How do the Tanis compare in both performance and weight?

Amen. Racing Ralphs for all conditions.
wait, this is what I do. fml
yes, but it's a tallboy...isn't it either 29" or 27.5+ ? RR only come in 2.10. 2.20 and 2.35...MM have one 27.5+ still Schwalbe though...they belong in the

has the flip-chip, but they don't recommend running the 130 fork with the 29r anymore.
(but who listens?)
Where do they not recommend it? It's a current bike for them.

Meanwhile I was trying to get the components to convert from 120 to 130 on mine...

And yes to durability on the DHR.

i came across it somewhere that it is recommended to change to 120mm when running 29r.

How wide are your rims? I suggest...
2.6 Maxxis DHF in the front
2.5 Maxxis Highroller in the back

Edit: saw you had 40mm rims. Both these tires should work well. Make sure they are the WT (wide trails). Hans Dampf are awesome tires but will last maybe 2-3 rides. That’s if you don’t tear the sidewall first. I’m not joking.

for trail riding one of my favorite combos is high roller 2 front and Agressor rear.
+1 for this for the summer, however the flattish center knobs of the aggressor doesn’t do so well in the winter muck, maybe bump to something more aggro in the rear for winter.

and 2.4 or 2.5 FTW

Anyone have any experience with these...

yeah I actually emailed raceface customer service, they said the smallest i could run on their 40mm rims was a 2.4 so I'm definitely thinking of going down to a 2.6

whats the main benefit of running a smaller width rear wheel? just less resistance? larger front for cornering?

I’m a Maxxis fan, but the compound does make a big difference on durability. I’ve settled on.

Front: 2.6 Maxxis Minion DHR2 EXO Maxx Terra 3C

Back: I prefer a faster rolling tire with a bit better mud shedding than the Rekon. 2.6 Maxxis Forekaster EXO Dual Compound

The Dual Compound (not the much heavier DD) makes a big difference in sidewall durability in the rear.
