Soundz Like Training Long Time

Is there a way to go from seven lakes drive in Harriman to the seven lakes drive in bear mountain without getting on the palisades parkway? Is it legal to ride on the palisades?

Soundz and I rode on the Palisades pway once for about 50 yards. I almost shit myself.

There is no way to legally do it w/o doing that 50 yard stretch of the parkway, which I'm not sure is legal in the first place. The thing that makes the 50 yards really exciting is that you have to actually cross it with cars coming from behind you at 60mph. It's a left side yield into a right side exit.

The better way to do it would be the illegal way, which is to go the wrong way for a 100-200 yard stretch. Like this:

Basically, when you get to the circle, you have to go the wrong way on Route 6 and keep sticking to the left. That stretch of road is an exit ramp, so there are less cars and they are going much slower than on that 50 yard stretch of parkway. It's the same way you would take if you were coming down from Bear Mountain into 7 Lakes going West, but going the opposite way.

An even better way to do it would be to go East on Route 6, North on 293, Right on Mine Road, Right on 9W, climb Bear Mountain, then head back down on 7 Lakes going West - for significantly more miles and elevation 😀

I guess I might as well update while I'm posting. The plan was to ride 3-4 hours on Sat or Sunday, but neither happened. Lots of church responsibilities going on and I couldn't get myself up after 3 hours of sleep, so it is what is is. The total hours for the week were:

Tue: 1hr 20min
Thu: 1hr 20min
Fri: 2hr 20min
Total: 5hrs

Hopefully, this coming week will be more productive, bike-wise. Here Byron, production manager, in the truck that we use to load all the gear for La Vina.

Facebook buddy said cop was going to take his bike for cycling on PIP, not sure where he was. A few years ago I cycled on PIP down to Anthony Wayne by Mistake.

This year I cycled route 6 from Thruway down to the circle. At the circle a motorist cursed me out as he flew by I made the 1st right to 7 Lakes South. It's a busy area no doubt

Morning didn't happen for me today. So after work hours, around 6pm, I set out on the road with lights for 1.5hrs. I did quite enjoy the ride in the dark, esp in the really local sections where there were no cars.

However, I am quite sad to report to my loyal readers that my toes are the type that just never stay warm. Today's ride was right around the 30 degree mark. I had my new Shimano winter boots on (2 sizes larger) with thick wool socks and my toes got cold after 30 minutes. They just got colder and colder from there. I must say though that it was tolerable to the point where I could probably have continued my ride for at least another hour. But I can't imagine riding w/o chemical warmers in the 20's. I will do some more experimenting, but I've pretty much exhausted all the possibilities and reserved to the fact that I need to carry chemical warmers.

I have that same problem but in a more... um... sensitive area...🙁 A chem pack would look like I'm trying to... uh... exaggerate

I posted in my FB that I was gonna do 3hrs of hill repeat, but I hadn't really calculated in the time to get there and come back. It ended up being more like half of that. Ended up doing 6 total climbs of roughly 500ft each. I paced myself pretty well and still had some gas at the end. I varied my technique to work on the different muscles group. I did a lot of sit and spinning at various cadences and gears. I sat and mashed. I stood up and mashed. I stood up and took it nice and slow. I felt very satisfied afterwards.

Went out this morning to see GTLuke at his work and pick up the RockHopper. I think my friend got a nice deal. Then I went to Morristown to see MattyBFat to pick up the 990 cassette. 2 mtbNJ peeps in 1 day and I didn't even ride with them. Must be some kind of record.

Then the day went buy, and it got dark again w/ no ride. I thought I should get out anyway w/ whatever time I have available because last week was a fail in terms of saddle time. So I mounted the lights and started out for a light ride into NYC. Once I got to Central Park, I once again could not resist the cat and mouse game. There was a guy doing laps who was a bit slower than me. Actually, he was faster than me on the downhills, esp with my CX bike gearing, and I'm not sure about the flats, but I could crush him on the uphills cause he was a heavier fella. I'd let him catch up on the flats and we'd go at it again.

Took it nice and easy on the way back. Then right as I was getting on the the ramp for the GWB, I was turning on the ramp where there is this wet steel plate .. my front wheel washes out and I ate it. Somehow, my right inner thigh/quad went smashing into the stem and I could barely pedal back home. They can't cover up those steel plates soon enough. I thought it might get better, but I'm still not able to put much pressure on it. So my weekend plans are up in the air. Hopefully, it is better after I wake up.

So the saga continues. Whether it's dirt, rocks or pavement I seem to still have a penchant for eating it. I think my mind wanders too much and I don't concentrate on the task at hand cause the last 2 crashes have been pretty silly.

were yoou doing hill repeats at the boat basin? hit me up if you ever go out on the weekends or weekdays around 4 pm-ish

I haven't ridden since last Thursday. My quad is feeling pretty f'ed up. On Sunday it was feeling a whole lot better that I was contemplating riding on Monday, but I must have done something to it. It's pretty much back to square one. Hopefully, I'm in riding condition by this weekend.

Have you taken anything that aids in muscle / injury recovery?

Not really other than Muscle Milk after my last ride. I'm actually gonna put some Traumeel on it now.

Pretty much bummer now that the trails are getting to be ridable.

It's been 12 days. Leg is better but still not so awesome. Still limping around and stairs are the suck. Plus the injury is right on the quad, not so good for riding a bike. I might have tried some light riding this week if I hadn't had the setback last week. I'll probably stay off the bike all week and maybe try something this weekend.

I hadn't really considered the Hunterdon ride since I could just go do JimV's loop whenever for free, but it is looking more interesting with everybody jumping in and the price is right. I still have until Fri to register so we'll see how the leg is responding.

That ride is turning into the who's who of mtbnj

Saturday, March 12

I had a slight scare yesterday because my calves were sore for no good reason. I mean all I have been doing is working eating and sleeping for the last 20 days. I did manage to gain 4 pounds during this time, so now I weigh 142 instead of 138. I'll take it considering I finished off 48 ice cream sandwiches, 3 bags of chocolate chip cookies, 2 bags of jolly ranchers and a bag of doritos during this 20 day period with no exercise. I must admit I've got a sizable gut considering my height/weight combo.

So this morning I woke up and my calves were no longer sore. Crisis averted. Caught up on some work then afternoon rolled around and I decided to go for a ride. I had a lot of time, but I didn't know how my thigh would respond, so I decided to play it by ear. I decided to start out with my 1hr Alpine loop. I could feel a twinge on the thigh for 1st 30 minutes, but I pretty much forgot about it after that - awesome.

The legs felt really strong after all that rest, but the problem was my cardio murdered me in the face, which is the opposite of the problem I usually have. Half way up the Alpine Climb, my cardio was done and the lady roadie who I was battling dropped me for good. Instead of continuing the ride, I decided to head back since my sinuses were kicking my butt as well.

I've gotta keep riding this week so my sinuses and lungs can get used to riding again. It almost feels like I undid all the riding I did over the winter, but hopefully things will get better after a few more rides, otherwise, I'll be in trouble for HOH.

Jimmy, my brother.

You may find more enjoyment with just riding your bike. No training, no racing, no keeping track of hours spent on a bike...just have fun and ride. I say this because you need to find your way and just be comfortable with cycling.

You've had a lot of injuries(thankfully none too major) that may be attributed to putting yourself in a place you shouldn't be, or your not ready for the world of competitive cycling yet.

Continue to ride and post about it as well as your sleep deprivation followed by going into a coma for 72hrs, you do have followers.

You are young, enjoy life. Come to know your purpose...it will come together.
