Rutgers University

My son is moving to Rutgers campus in New Brunswick this week. I know there are some graduates here on this board. Anyone can share tips and pointers about campus life?

Thanks for reading🙂

oh man, why is Norm in Canada!?

I prefer the burrito joint in the College Ave. student center more than the burrito joints on Busch and Livingston.

I have only passed through briefly a couple of times since I graduated in 2010. They have done so much construction there it seems like a different place from even just a few years ago. RIP lot#8 and the grease trucks.

There is no shortage of things to do and distractions. From an academic standpoint, you have to make sure you stay on top of your major requirements/pre-reqs and class scheduling to avoid the "RUscrew". Its a big school and no one is going to hold your hand so kids that don't stay on top of things fall behind quickly.

Also, the bus routes out to Cook and Douglas suck, stick to classes on College Ave/Livingston/Busch.

I didnt go to school here, but I work on campus 2-3 days a week. In New Brunswick, Easton Ave. will have a ton of eateries and bodegas for odds and ends. There is a Walgreens just past RWJ, and a Rite Aid over in Highland Park. There is construction everywhere, it seems they are putting new buildings wherever they can. They just completed new dorms last summer on Livingston, and it seems like the university is trying to make it so kids dont have to take their business off campus. There is a full scale diner, asian restaurant, mini supermarket, burrito joint, nail salon, ice cream shop, starbucks and a movie theater, all right next to the RAC.

The grease trucks are still on campus, you just need to find where they are parked for the day. Im sure during orientation he will get info on clubs, activities and all that other good stuff.

College Ave., Busch and Livingston are all relatively safe, nice areas. Cook/Douglass is on the other side of New Brunswick from College Ave, and you have to go through the not so nice section to get there.

RU

I went there for BioChemistry. MY wife went there for Journalism. My Step-Father is Dean there. My Step-mother went there for teaching. I still hang out there and bring my kids around often. As mentioned, it has come a long way.
What school is he going to? Major? Where is he living?
I think I can shed a lot of light on some of your questions.
First piece of advice--DO NOT Stray too far off George Street between campuses, especially while drunk.

Rutgers Bicycle Team info

If he has room, tell him to bring his bike! They have 2 different bicycle "clubs"...A Triathlon team, and the race team (which includes a few disciplines, including race, cyclo-cross, and some MTB). Here are some links:

We sponsor both teams, so if he needs anything, he will be taken care of well on the cheap with the team discounts.

There's an outdoor club which is kinda cool. They do hiking, snowshoeing, caving, camping trips, etc. And you can borrow kayaks and canoes and other outdoor equipment

Also the rockwall on college ave isn't bad. A buck to rent shoes and free to climb

Also, be careful at night around college ave. There is a lot more crime than Rutgers leads you to believe.

which dorm is your kid looking at for his first year?

i graduated many many many years ago. i had a great time at RU and i still am in NB quite a bit.

Great info here. Thanks a lot. He will be staying on Douglass campus, Lippincott Hall. Not by his choice. He is going to major in IT.

Right on the Cook/Douglas border. Nice area, though I'm a little partial as a Cook grad 😀

There is less distraction because you need to go to the other side of NB on a campus bus to access a lot of the city "amenities". However I'm sure they've added a lot to this area also in the 10 years I've been out.

Where will his classes be? First semester you're a bit more at the mercy of the machine in terms of schedule. I'm guessing a lot of the IT specific classes will be on Busch or College Ave, but for the first year basics a lot of the classes can probably be had on Cook/Douglas.

Good luck to him!

Agreed on staying on top of his course work - very easy to fall behind. Busch always had the nicest dining hall even though they claim to operate the same. The grease trucks are still on campus, they just got evicted for more student housing. There is one truck down by the library on College Ave and one over on Cook somewhere. Walking back drunk from College Ave to Cook is the jeherico mile, so tell him not to miss the last bus. All the construction is all tied into the upcoming 250th anniversary in 2016. Most importantly, try to find used books, cost goes up exponentially for new.

Classes and schedule are all over the place...

Expos I and Calc in the same semester. Good times.

I think my professors opened both of the classes saying something like only 60% of kids pass this class :getsome:

Ahh, good ole Expos I in Ruth Adams....That building is literally tucked away in the furthest corner of the campus. I had a few early morning classes out that way in my time, it was like a zombie trek getting over there.

It does suck that he's spread over a few campuses, but on the up side he'll get to see them all and might like one better than another and decide to move there. Doesn't look like he has any back-to-backs on different campuses either. That was always a thing to watch for "back in the day"

Also dudeman scored a schedule with only on2 classes before noon, nicely done!
