JORBA: Sourlands
JORBA.ORG
So i rode 6MR today for the first time since last week and i was VERY upset to see that since i was there last, someone cut down the tree on the left side of the "technical climb with a big root near the top" on the "Old Red" trail. First of all, it was a perfectly healthy tree that was not obstructing the trail and should not have been cut. Second of all, this could not have been JORBA approved bc that section of trail isn't even on the official map. And third of all, that "technical climb" was completely rideable with the tree there. The tree gave it the illusion of being hard but it wasn't. I rode it today the same way i rode it with the tree in place and it wasnt any easier, it was just less intimidating. Do you just straight-line the turns on Twisties too? Mountain biking is about challenging yourself, not dumbing down the trails so you don't have to get your lazy ass off your bike and walk a tough section. That's how you improve your skills, walk a section that's too hard for you until you get the balls to try it, then keep trying it until you get it. There are not many sections at 6MR to do this and this rogue trail change just greatly diminished one of them. If you dont like challenging yourself, get out of the sport. To whoever cut this tree down, you are selfish and don't think about other trail users. OK, rant over.

hhm. Bad description, I can't think of what you are describing. Don't assume it was a mountain biker, could have been a hiker, equestrian, dog walker, farmer, hunter, punk kid, etc, etc..

Is this the tree by Hot Topic? or is it the one by the gnarly Cinnabon DH section? Either way, having the gnar removed from 6 mile Resegnar is a gnar gnar.

I have to say that I agree with some of what Gmb3 is saying. Some of those spots I've been trying to master for the past year or two and now they are no more..... BUT, I think the big picture is that without these changes we were in danger of losing all of those sections of trails to biking.

I'm sure the J's will chime in, but don't be so quick to judge the folks that put so much time and effort into this place.

I notice that missing tree the last Saturday and J did not remove it. Most likely the Allaire log hater moved in this area and changed diet.

Alex,

Sorry, if these were not approved changes then I stand corrected, and I'm upset too. :getsome:

It had to be a mtn biker because a hiker or equestrian wouldn't even notice that tree bc they'd just walk right up the middle where the root is bigger. I'm pretty sure this wasn't done by "the (jorba) folks that put so much time and effort into this place" because a responsible trail steward would not cut this tree out. And this was not a section of trail we were in danger of losing. We already lost it bc the park no longer recognizes it. All the official trailwork being done there is awesome and i'm not bashing that at all, just this one tree cutting.

You know what really grinds my gears?

It sounds like you did it and are trying to cover your tracks.

I know the spot you're talking about with the big root at the top of the climb...I don't remember a tree being there though :hmmm:

i wouldnt put it past him. you should have seen all the trees he cut out of blue mt. they ran him out of the state and now all he rides is places like six

😉

It was not me. Alex told me about it right away. I am not sure who did it, but I am certain that it is the same person (or people) who continue to cut out trees that narrow the trails.

When we cut new routes we very rarely remove trees. Most of the trail we cut go in without removing any trees at all. We simply find the routes that nature had provided to us.

my guess of the cutters would be the people (kids) who you can occasionally hear riding motorcycles/atvs in the place. don't know if anyone else has seen them - i have heard them maybe once or twice while i was out.

as an FYI - there's some moto riding spots on bennetts lane in the farm fields, which is a hop skip and jump from 6 miles... personally i think it would be inevitable for someone to get into 6 miles on a big kid bike.

Sounds pretty serious to me.

Dead serious. You guys should meet outside at 3 o'clock by the flagpole, it's on.

PS-I have no idea where you guys are talking about, I didn't know a) there was a technical climb in 6-Mile or b) that there would be some sort of root or tree making that technical section more technical. However since all the bears and animal skeletons have taken over the park I've not been back so someone could have added a technical climb in that time.

I think the technical climb was right after those super rocky switchbacks and right before that one hill with all the boulders.

Am i riding the same 6MR as everyone? All this talk about boulders and rocks, technical climbs, make me think i am not in the right spot.

But, i will give it this, it's pretty technical- pedaling away from a bear constantly. I mean, one spill and it's all over for you...

Although, perhaps it's because I skip out on the red after Jacques Ln lot. I hit the road out of the parking lot, to Canal Rd, and hit the blue from there. Seems to add some time / mileage to my ride, but i could totally be imagining things... :need coffee:
