Problem!!!

I tried the earphones things last year on the road bike and didn't like it that much. On the mtb I found the buds moving around in my ear just plain annoying. I am with Don, I like all the noises associated with riding, especially thins time of year with the crunchy leaves and such.

As far as other people wearing them, I could careless but you need to be able to hear things going on around you. At 6 mile the other morning I was behind a walker with headphones on and rang my bell around 10 f'ing times and the f'er didn't even flinch. He didn't even know I was there until they was a 90 degree turn. I was even more annoyed that my average speed dropped by 0.09 following the guy. WTF!

I have always thought about having tunes while riding but I have never done it. I tend to think it would be a royal pain in the arse, I guess like some others I am a minimalist, I hate camelbacks as well, what happened to stopping for a drink in the serenity of the woods. I also love the sounds of the "ride". Another deterent is seeing all the time wasted by my wife when she tries to update her I-pod library! Geez, forget it, I love music more than most but I let satellite radio choose for me, it make for a more exciting day.

I guess it ends up as everyone nneds to be responsible on the trails and know your surroundings.

I use 1 bud on the road. In the woods I like to hear around me. Plus I find that stuff playing in my head and trying to ride on rocks don't go well together for me. It is to distracting.

Ok this is my problem, who hates thoes people riding the trails
not pAying attention and listening to their mp3 player, well thanks to one J*****s yesterday I got a broken finger now. This is bull and I'm getting tired of it. What do u people think????? State your opinionssss

It is possible that not paying attention and listening to music can be mutually exclusive events.

Bluetooth around the back of the head headphones. They rule. Onboard buttons for ffw and rev and vol up and down. Plus I use them with my iPhone so I can take calls and tell the lady I'm almost home so she makes food for me 🙂
all with the phone in my camelback. The around the neck thing works great for taking them off and putting them back on when I see people. No wires.

I wear earphones on low volume and never had any problems. I can even talk to my buds while riding in a single file and hear everything around me. I've never had any problems and have come up to other riders alot.

I still would like to hear how the bike with the earphones on caused a broken finger.

I don't wear headphones, I enjoy the sounds of the woods while MTBing..birds, leaves, silence

While road riding I do not listen to music and feel safer tuned into traffic on the road. The other day at a busy hard to see intersection I was waiting at a red light and ready to go when it turned green. As I clipped in a car trying to squick through the yellow/red light came roaring through the intersection. Luckly I heard the car roaring up the hill and waited for him to run the red light at 50 mph. When this happens you get a vision of what might have happenend and realize you have to have complete focus when riding on the road.

I gotta agree headphones on the road ( I can always hear cars) no headphones on the trail I like to hear the deer running from me as I cause total chaos on the trails..
I mostly run joggers down when they wear headphones due to the fact they never hear the "on your left" shout...

I wear headphones whenever or wherever I'm alone on the bike, road or mountain, never has it been an issue, son...

Since this is an endless argument I've seen repeated in numerous MTB and roadie forums...

My choice to wear headphones is mine and mine alone. If you do not like it, too bad!!!

I wear them, in both ears, and the volume is pretty friggin high. I'm still able to hear things. I can pick up just about any non-natural sound (gear shift, chain-slap, cough, brake squeal, talking, etc.) In the three years I've been doing it, I have been spooked by humans maybe 5 times. None have resulted in an incident.

All riders are expected to be riding under control of their speed and able to respond to other trail users. Sorry to read that someone was injured but both riders have to accept some level of responsibility for what occurred.

i agree with ben (tough and wise🙂)

PS; i never listen to music when i'm riding either alone nor with group.
to entertaint myself,.i just humming or listening the sound of the nature of my surounding, sometimes i sing alone or sometimes i scream like lunatic😀

i get up for work at 3:30am so i am awake and i was just a little pissed off when i woke up and could not move my finger.......

i usually just bungee my ghetto blaster boombox to my back. this way everyone can hear me coming.

Actually, some of my best times have been at trail jams with an old ghetto blaster tuned into the classic rock station. Absolutely perfect.

While boxes are cool, DJ Trails and headphones are a big no-no. Communication is needed. Almost had a local at our old spot run BMX "pro" Chris Duncan over because he was fiddling with his tunes in between sets and couldn't hear "coming thru" being yelled.

And riding with a live band playing is pretty rad. Did that at the old JT's skatepark during some mtb pro jam they had some years ago. I can't remember the bands - but it was something hardcore. It happened by total accident as I had no business riding w/ Chase, Seth Lolli, Ebbit, Lars and some more heavy hitters but it was fun as hell. I think Jim Vreeland was there and might remember more about it.

Nice. Now I can find time to call my shrink. :hmmm:

So what's the story behind it?

Yeah where's the story.
I have been waiting all day to use this pic

I use my mp3 player 98% of the time I am out. The way the volume is set to a point where I can still hear someone call my name (usually my gf behind me) or when my cellphone rings (Work calls). I also ride in the evening where I am yet to come across cross traffic in the trails. There has been only two occasions that I have had someone come up behind me in the last 12 months and yup, even with the headphones in, I was able to hear and move over.

Common sense and caution always saves the day.
