Post your BooBoo's

Ok, after viewing this humbling thread, I am a little frightened. The kind of frightened you get when wating on line for lets say The Twister at great adventure..:scared: But seriously, just like anything there are always risks..and im not worried. But I am like the most none uniformed mountain biker...I wear a helmut, and thats it. I have fallen and bruised/cut myself before. Viewing these injuries makes me realize that maybe I should get some gloves, I don't go (that) fast or steep enough for shin guards..is that the right thing to say? Other than a helmut whats the best safety gear to have on? :hmmm:.......Ummmmmmm..be safe..!

elisa...

The lid is the most important piece of PPG you can have. The shin guards are in case you want to wear a dress/skirt...I am waiting for a company to come out with some gear that protects my ego for when I hit the dirt, still no progress on that

Definitely gloves. Not knowing where you ride, I would say body armour can be a good thing in rocky areas, although a bit cumbersome on long x/c rides. Most cases you won't put yourself in a position that you mentally can't handle. Chances are you dismount and walk something if it looks difficult. Don't let the pics scare you as that thread was started a few years ago.

So this is not a MTB related boo boo, but it is still a sweet one. I am currently gutting a house that has the old school mud floors in the bathrooms, with wire lath and 2" of plaster. With no demo saw on the job the next best we had was the 25 lb wrecking bar to get underneath the wire and pry it off the joists or sub floor. The one end of the bar has a single chisel end and the other has 2 claws. So I am sliding the bar under trying to find some leverage to pry and find a stubborn section... so that is when I decide to throw a little extra into it...not good. The bar slides across the floor and jumps the tile and on the follow thru the claw end of the bar nails the inside of my knee cap. Now I have a pretty good tolerance for pain, but this one brought me down. It felt like my body temperture increased by 20 degrees and I went deaf for 20-30 seconds, I hobbled outside because I thought I was going to hurl. I just rubbed the knee and uttered a mantra of curse words and hoped that the knee cap didn't feel like a broken tea coaster under my skin. Ok, so the good news is, I can pedal this evening with only slight discomfort... a fortunate result after taking a hit to the funny bone.

First off a helmet is obviously critical and full finger gloves will help make little falls less annoying. Helmut I think was a german heavy metal band and that won't help. Seriously though, a lesson I am still learning every season apparantly is to ride within your abilities and there is nothing wrong with backing off a bit to save your body. Know your strengths and weaknesses and work on them but pushing to the max does not have to be 100% of the time, as slowing down a touch is still faster than 8 weeks off the bike.
As far as protection goes, I actually was considering some kind of light weight forearm protection for the techy places as it seemed everytime I went down I would land on the same spot on my arm and it was just killing me last year. I never got that however as I had a season ending crash that did in my shoulder because I am an idiot. However the arm protection wouldn't have helped in this case.
My new mantra is slow down a bit so you are alive to smell the roses. Hell I had guys I was racing against last year telling me to freakin relax a little.
Thankfully my wife doesn't post here or she would convince you to just go shopping with her instead.

next time i go home ill see if i still have the xrays from when i dislocated my shoulder mtbing, i know it doesnt compare to what jim did, but its my worst injury to date

Thanks..and your right about Helmut..I meant to say protective head gear...LOL...I agree with your mantra..slowing down is the best thing to do..no need for me to speed...and no shopping for me... I wouldnt give up my weekly mountain biking excursions for anything right now...!!!😛

I fractured my orbital bone in two places, and now sport a nice scar on my cheek. If you're going to go over your handlebars, you may as well land on your face I suppose. All of my doctors told me I was super lucky not to have more damage. I lost consciousness so I don't know if my helmet helped, but it definitely didn't hurt. Now I have a full face helmet.

Poor Reggies leg got a thrashing this week.... Thursday punchin a hole in the shin with a rock, followed up with a Sunday evening brisk over the bars, deep tissue smash on a rock with not so subtle hints of lacerations and contusions... all the while laughing and smiling like hes got the "Syndrome" the guy is insane!

"Rake your Taint on a babyhead" day is comin up.....

That is a first for me. Are the banks closed too???

The leg is still a sausage link from my knee to the ankle. Actually, not sure if I should visit the Dr.

For those that have medical backgrounds or stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, can I get your feedback. Sunday's latest OTB resulted in the above seen lacerations with immediate swelling to that specific area. Today (4 days later), the leg is extremely swollen from the knee to my ankle. Please note that I've been on my feet for the past two days at a work expo, which obviously didn't help matters.

thoughts???

If it is really red and swollen, it could be a sign of infection, but that would be an extreme case in my eyes. Those types of cuts usually look pretty nasty until they heal, so it is probably nothing. Keep in mind, if you go to the doc, they are going to scrub the one with a wire brush.

See Reggie!! SEE! 😀 you are a trooper sir. I would have been rollin around on the ground with that last one.... The sound of someones bike behind you blasting through a rock garden then silence for that split second, and the dull thud of flesh pounding granite, and the ensuing clatter of chainstays and handlebars ..... ugh .... pinchin holes in the saddle thinkin about that, almost nauseous 😛uke:
