never going to be able to ride

Why can't you ride? I don't understand. I must not have put almost 400 miles on my mountain bike so far this year then:hmmm:

-Jim.

i have been accused of seeing the glass half full before, but i dunno - i'm heading out after the new snow. the existing snow has to be pretty compacted after all the rain (and is probably as icy and slippery as shizznizzle too). 3 to 6 on top of this won't matter a whole bunch. hell, some new snow might actually give something for your tires to bite on.

Not my greatest weekend, but I still got 5.5hrs of pedaling outdoors this past sat/sun. Its fine. Only thing im avoiding right now is road riding in the dark. Now with the shoulders totally snow covered, im sticking to the trainer/rollers when I have no daylight.

when you get from riding outside on the road bike, do you wash the salt and other crap off them? last i heard six mile was not good for riding (not true?)

Yes just use a couple of buckets of hot tap water and clean your drivetrain, braking surface of wheels and brake pads of all the salt and grime. It takes less than five min.

this past weekend, other than the tires, the bikes came back perfectly clean. But it was below freezing and there were no puddles.

Got out in Philly tonight in anticipation of new snow tomorrow. The trail was just crazy -- it gets a lot of foot and horse traffic along with bikes, and everywhere people have been walking for the past two days had turned into slush and, now, ice. So the entire ride was a mix of white-knuckle-out-of-control sliding, power-pedaling-through-semi-frozen-trampled snow piles, occasional inches-deep puddles of mud, and one or two straightaways of clean, smooth packed-down snow. It was a good ride but relentless on the SS -- I couldn't get out of the saddle or I'd lose traction. I've kept riding through all the bad weather, but I'm with you, pedal -- I can't wait for it to be gone. In fact, I'm taking off for warmer climates for a week of pre-season get-my-ass-back-in-shape in February, I just can't go through another winter like last year!

I hear ya! All I can say is...

I must admit that I've been uninspired by all of this myself. I haven't logged any real miles since early December 🙄 I'm not even sure of the purpose of this post, other than to say I've just been too lazy to attempt a ride. That said, I'm going to give it a shot at Six Mile tomorrow just for the hell of it. If that doesn't work I'll try the canal....and if there's no love there, I guess I'll go spent some $$ on bike parts or something.

for those that are riding in the NJ area, are you running studded tires? If not what tread are you running and how is it working? I am thinking of picking up a set of Maxxis Ardent 2.4's 29er tubeless. Thoughts? Issues?

i ride a lot in the winter and never had studs and get along just fine. just get a nice wide tire with lots of tread for more grip. the only time i slip is on solid ice flows, and even then, sometimes, if i ride gingerly enough, i can make it across/up/down, but usually i slip out and eat it. part of the deal of winter riding for me.

i'll eventually get some studs, but everytime i almost get around to pulling the trigger on a pair, its spring.

just got back from checking out the DNR between around Carneige road in lawrence. I am not gonna say it was unrideable, but it was. I made it about 100' before I came to a halt. Tried going towards trenton and didn't even make it that far. If it was bare before it snowed, it would be rideable, but the 3-6" of frozen snow underneth today's snow just makes it non-fun tough.
