Looking for a new hydration pack, any suggestions / good or bad experiances? I don't mind having a larger pack with a large reservoir, also I been hearing about packs that make little contact with your back which would be ideal. Thanx

I have two.

I run the Mule long hauls. Fits anything and everything. I'm sure just about everyone else here runs this one too.

I also run this pack below for smaller trips when I don't think bottles do the trick (mud and or certain races). Could fit a couple of CO2's and some snacks maybe, not much else.

They may be referring to the Osprey brand of packs. They have a mesh panel that is pulled tight to avoid the pack from touching your back. Very comfortable and allows excellent airflow. They have a bike specific model that is lighter than most small camelback packs. I have one and absolutely love it.

ditto on osprey - i have the manta 20...osprey makes backpacks full time and built the manta around the hydration bladder, not just as an afterthought.

Im liking the Osprey Viper from the reviews I have read but I havent seen them locally. DOes anyone sell these around here?

I started selling Osprey last year after i was given one to test. I use this on the mtb and on the Motobike. I have no issues at all w/ this bag.

We still sell more camelbak from the name recognition but it is worth taking a hard look at osprey.

The bladder is super nice too.

I bought a Camelbak MULE last year after I decided to retire the one I had been using for 10 years. In hindsight, I wish I picked up a different bag.

I probably carry too much with me when I ride, but I like having a lot of pocket room and storage space. While I appreciate the configuration, overall, I find the bag too bulky and stiff.

I also do not like the access to the water bladder. The zipper design on the older one made it easy to fill the bladder while it was in the bag. With the new one, I find it awkward to have to partially remove the bladder from the bag, or else liquid would spill all over.

While I don't like replacing things for the sake of buying something new, I may take a hard look at different bag options this season.

Jdog you have the viper 10 in stock that i can pick up? i was gonna go hit the trails today but feel sick as all hell and figured i would do some shopping. i spent about 4 hours looking at all the packs last night and i actually narrowed it down to the viper pack, love the design, ridgidity of the reservoir/handle and the capacity of it, little features like the magnetic hose catch, helmet clip and cell pouch are a very nice bonus. Thank you all for your help

Mule

I have the MULE and love it. I have been using it for 3 seasons now. I like having the 100oz balder. I have actually gone through it all (and then some) on hot days/long rides. It has enough room for everything that I carry, but not much more. I carry 2 spare tubes, a mini pump, a multi tool, Leatherman, tire lever set, Slime Scab pack, a small first aid kit, cell phone and keys, and some "power bars" or whatever kind of snacks I have. If I pack my North Face Shell (and it is just a shell- can fold into a Big Mac box or roll into smaller than a paper towel roll cardboard tube)... then things start getting tight. If I throw in my Smart Wool long sleeve med weight shirt, then things start getting uncomfortable
My friend got the "HAWG". Very nice pack- but too big for me. He always has to stop and re-lash stuff down because it tends to move around and settle, throwing off the balance of the pack. But, he can (and does) carry what I carry plus a extra tire. On winter rides though he has plenty of room for a sweatshirt, where I do not. So, for winter rides or long rides, the HAWG would be great, but for what I do, the MULE is just about right. Some times I do wish it was a tad bit larger… But if I pack it strategically, it does 90% of what I need.

BTW… That Osprey Manta 20 looks awesome. I’ll be sure to check that out if the MULE dies on me…
