N+1

I think you need:

3 mtn bikes (HT w/ gears, FS gears, SS)
2 cross bikes
1-2 road bikes

I have 3/2/2, but I have a FR instead of a FS geared bike. I also don't think you necessarily need 2 road bikes, if you can use your second CX bike for crappy road weather. But then, if you have 2 of each, you can take the crappiest to another country and leave it there.

You can always use another bike. But the usefullness of the (n+1)th bike gets smaller and smaller and then stops outweighing the downside of buying another bike.

my theoretical and practical spousal max is 4

Cannondale Supersix
Giant TCX (cross and weather)
Superfly
Rig

Almost as important is the # and quality of wheelsets you need. I need more.

currently 3:
08 jamis dakota 29
09 specialized crosstrail
10 specialized rockhopper29 (converted to ss)

Currently have 2

Salsa Mamasita HT 29er
Cannondale franken road bike

I'd like to upgrade the road bike, or get a cross bike, and maybe add a SS 29er. I'm also tossing around the idea of getting something steel...

Dual suspension xc bike, track bike, 2 BMX bikes, road bike, and in process of building hardtail xc bike. I'm also trying to get rid of the track bike and at least one of the BMX bikes.

I got:

Superfly
Singlefly
(And an extra set of wheels and rotors that can go on either bike)

CAAD8 Cross bike (with 2 sets of wheels. Tubeless road and cross tires on each)

But Norm is right. I think 5 is the magic number.

I need a road bike and a FS bike to round it all off.

cervelo r3-sl
niner air 9
ridley x-ride.....weirdest friggin geometry possible..this one needs to be swapped out

So, five currently built ... all older frames built up with new components:

'03 Iron Horse SGS Team (AM/FR)
'00 Specialized S-Works CC (CC/Trail)
'93 Cannondale M700 (converted to SS)
'9? Cannondale Caad-3, Team Saeco Replica (Roadie)
'8? Univega SupraSport (Fixie)

Am awaiting arrival of '07 Banshee Morphine frame that will become a 1x9 and trying. Awaiting motivation to build up an early '80s Monty-219 mod trials bike frame that's been hanging on the garage wall for last two years. Would like to say I'm done, but ...

my theoretical and practical spousal max is 4

spousal max, that's a good one. I think a 4th bike to go along with my 3 snowboards would br pushing it. Would love to get a 29erHT either a EWR or Niner MCR

Here's my list...

'07 Fisher paragon..29er alum hardtail..SS....xc/trail bike
'08 Brodie Diablo.....26" alum fully..........fr/dh bike for gravity riding
'06 GT Ruckuss......26" steel hardtail..SS..x/c/trail/bike trailer puller
Soul Cycles Roscoe.26" steel hardtail..SS..dirt jump/skate park/hardtail fr

Then the wife's bike..

'09 Giant Yukon.....26" alum hardtail....geared....xc/trail bike

and the daughters....

Barracuda a2zs.....26" alum hardtail....1 x 9.......x/c trail bike
'10 We The People..20" alum dirt jump/skate park bike

2- Cannondale CAAD 9 cross bikes
Cannondale System Six
Cannondale F29er
Salsa Selma SS
Fuji Team Comp (Converted to Fixed gear)

I always think about a TT bike but dont think ill get the use that justifies it. I also would like to try a FS 29er and see how I feel about that.

oh boy. ok, so i'm currently at 4 but really 3:

kid trekker/loaner: 1994 trek 970
hi-zoot roadie pr!ck: 2009 trek madone
leatherman mtb: 2009 niner SIR9
the get 'er done: 2010 fisher erwin

i believe my magic number to be four:
1 roadie (got it)
1 cx (got it, but need to lighten it ALOT)
2 mtb (one full squish, one hardtail); my plan is Single Fly and hi-fi now...

damn, maybe the mtb number is actually 3? i like my 1x9 niner.

i'm only at three, but i need more. and its definitely not a "wanting" more, i "need" more 😀

right now my small stable is:

2010 brodie bruzza - longer travel 26" hardtail. i use this for everything from x/c rides to the pumptrack to the occasional DS track run.

two mid 1980's centurion road bikes - steel frame, hideous graphics, and the best price => free. one is together, one is totally apart.

I only have three bikes right now but I'm always on the lookout. I have a Redline monocog rigid 29er SS which gets most of my attention, a salsa big mama FS 29er, and a busted up old road bike. I may drop mama for a nice 1x9 HT though. Shes nice and all but too much bike for where I ride.

The wife has a 1x6 laid back cruiser that I steal from time to time.

Three seems to be the magic number....

Currently I have two in the stable and a third arriving any day now!

Cannondale - 29er SS only stock bits left is the frame.
Cannondale - SuperX

And the new arrival that I am beyond excited about!

Cannondale - SuperSix Di2

This will be the end of my stable until they call me armstrong, macca or johnson! The stable is complete; we will continue to flog the engine until performance improves!!

I'm at three as well.

'09 Rockhopper Comp 29r - now SS
'09 Vodoo Canzo 29r (FS)
'10 Giant Defy (picking up today)

I do have a Motobecane Fantom Pro29r frame hanging in my garage that I'm thinking about putting together as a geared HT, but I'll have to see if this will really materialize.

My crowded garage contains:

'08 Cannondale Prophet 4
'10 Cannondale Flash 29 1
'93 Specialized Rockhopper (1st mtb)
'89 Bridgestone RB-2 (mostly used during winter on the trainer)
a trash picked fixed gear conversion Bianchi road bike

The wife's Specialized hybrid is in there too.

Would like to get a SS 29er, but need to make some room.
