Munitions Response at Blauvelt Firing Range

100 years after it ceased to be a firing range our Government has decided to figure out if there are any nasties lying around in the park. Apparently they played with grenades up there in addition to just shooting targets. A few years ago while taking soil samples they found something to cause concern.

Currently there is a small crew in the park mapping/surveying the area. They are cutting their way thru the undergrowth with a skid steer mounted brush hog. There’s some infringement onto the bike trails, especially near the Long Path at the 600yd target wall.

They did a nice job brushing back the road up from 303.

20 or so years ago, there was an old guy that would be up above the walls with metal detector on a lot of weekends . Guy would walk out of the woods with a bucket full of bullets. Claimed he melted the lead for fishing weights. He used to tell us to stay on the trails to avoid the old land mines……😉

Way back in the day, like pre-9/11 we used to ride moto as kids through an old cranberry bog that backed up to the firing ranges on the base. We'd often cut through some range roads to get over to some trails further away. Some of the stuff they used to drop or leave behind was bizarre as a civvy. But if you were lucky, there'd be a bunch of half-eaten mre's that you could scavenge the cheese and crackers from. 😆 😆 Definitely not something you'd do these days...

I rode here today and the survey crew has been through a lot of areas already. There was an abnormal amount of small logs across the trails in which I did move out of the way as I saw them. Not sure if I was suppose to but what's done is done now..

Additionally you can smell the hydraulic/diesel fuel on many of the trails but all in all the trails weren't tore up too bad.

And finally on a weird and extremely odd note, I once again ran into a woman peeing in the middle of the trail. It's always awkward and this is the 3rd time in two years I have seen it at Blauvelt. Why not go a little ways off the trail to pee?? The only place, outside of Blauvelt, that I have seen as many women peeing in front of a man with out a care in the world was at the West Indian Parade in NYC. Maybe its a mental reaction with ammunition buried in the ground...

I’ve seen that in Blauvelt too. A while back, near Lizard Rock.

Maybe it’s the same women?
