Lewis Morris Conditions

Nice and frozen with a light dusting of snow. Some awful ruts from when it was warm which is a bummer. Otherwise good to go.

My guess is that the lines are packed down and iced over at this point, this is why I'm looking at going south. Lewis is best during the snowfall and right after, or waiting til its gone

Has all the snow melted at lewis yet? Haven't been there in at least 6 weeks and I don't want to make the trip if its gonna be an ice sheet which I assume it is. Could hit 50 on saturday.

Hey Blair, im going to take a drive over there on Saturday to check it out. If it's good I'm going to ride a few miles Saturday and a few rounds on Sunday. I will keep you posted.

drove past the northern loop today, plenty of snow stil. not sure what it will be like further south.

I drive the Jockey Hollow side on my way to work(south side). With all the snow and low temps no riding at least till the end of March...unless we get some torrential rains with 2 weeks of dry 70 degree weather...then will be in good shape😀

Thanks for info. I'm gonna bring both bikes so if trails suck I can ride the road bike through lewis and jockey hollow for awhile

I went trail running in there after work yesterday. Its a mess. I would say at least another 2 weeks IF the weather stays dry and gets warmer. Still snow covered in many spots. Ground has to thaw and dry out. The park always drys out quick but its gonna be typical mud season soon.

The main fire roads weren't terrible but still very snow-covered. The other trails were a mess. To actually ride in there I think would do more harm than good. I know, we're all anxious to get out...soon!

Not bad. Ground was pretty much still frozen when I was there. With all the rain coming this weekend (over 2 inches) things are going to soften up pretty quickly and get very sloppy. The good thing about LM is that it drains pretty quickly. The clay dirt they have never holds water long which is good. Jockey Hollow is a great trail run as well. Temps heading in the 60's by early next week. Time to get ready.....

As mtnbikr5 said it will get sloppy this weekend with the rain, and the thaw that's upon us will make it susceptible to ruts, erosion and other damage in the low-lying areas. While it's true the trails generally drain well, this is mainly the case with the hilly sections. The flatter sections (such as near the golf course on the west side, or on the east side of the camping area, or at the southern border near Tempe Wicke road) are going to need a lot of time. What we see when people ride too soon, is that the trails just keep getting wider as people ride around the muddy sections. Contrary to the old Pontiac ad, wider is not better 😉

I do not recommend riding Lew Mo this weekend or for at least a week after we are officialy out of the thaw.

It's a lot of work to keep the trails in good shape. We have plans this year to build new trail sections and if the existing ones have too much damage, then we will have to divert our limited resources to fixing those, and the new trails will take a back seat.

thanks!

Ice breaker is right. Stay off the trails. I know we all want to get out now with the temps climbing but it really does more harm than good. Don't need ruts once season finally "opens" for us. Way too much raining coming in this weekend. In time...
