IGVENTURE

I miss you guys!

No more coaching for a while! So I may make the next whatchmacallit. Except I may have to work. but then life is about choices.

Hope u can make one of the ST races. There are 2 left, this Saturday and next. Norm is planning a bangin full tilt boogie at the last one. I don't know what this means but I'm hoping like hell out soccer game is late that day so I can make it.

Ha I said stop having a pissing contest, 26er easily falls into it cause he has an addictive personalty 😀

Yeah, I get easily distracted and start chasing the carrot. I admit to trying to out-tech the master. My rims are f'd

Soccer season picked up again so finding time to keep this updated and get rides in has become harder. Running Jamie up to Morristown 3 days during the week after work and then games on the weekends keeps me busy.

Walters No-Frills Mooch ST #3

Last Saturday I did the 3rd ST race. The line up had some real heavy hitter's showing up. The top 10 guys where all well know names in MTBing and yeah I'm happy to say that Utah Joe is now one of those fast guys. He has gotten so good at these races that he is able to hang with the pro's.

I'm doing better with these races but ST races that require big power outputs are not my specialty. But as my teammate Kirt pointed out to me after the 1st ST race getting faster in this discipline will help me across the board with doing H2H races as well as endurance races. I agree with this work on your weakness to improve overall.

For this race I did get a call up since I've done all the ST races. I always feel good at the start and can hang with the leaders for about 1/2 a lap, then they disappear and I find myself in no mans land...not fast enough for the leaders but good enough to keep ahead of mid-fudgepackers.

After lap 2 It dawned on me that Norm was not in front of me and I was actually in front of him. This didn't last long as I heard him coming up behind me on the climb at the beginning of lap 3. I was giving it everything I had to stay in front of him but he eventually passed me and I could not stay on his wheel when he passed me. As he passed me he told me to stay seated on the climbs to conserve energy for powering on the flats. I do need to ride more effeciently to conserve my power but I believe I burnt a lot of matchs at the start to stay ahead. Hopefully he races the last one so I can see if I can hold him off for 3 laps at the last race.

Hey look at me in front of Ryan! I finished 2nd place in the 45+ class.

High Gear A Ride

Yeah there back again. Its nice this year cause Norm has really encouraged the team to show up if they can. We meet at his house and roll from there and when we're done and he has enough food he feeds us...bonus!

This ride really makes you work, I am not alone when I say the highest my HR gets during the season in on this ride. Its just intense. I felt good the other night, despite not riding in a group since last year it felt like I didn't miss a beat. I was able to work in the paceline a lot without skipping a rotation. As usual it seems like the same 15 guys taking regular pulls while the other 15 guys hide or get dropped. We did have a large group last night and things did get a little sloppy at some points. Some ground rules are going to be laid down before the next ride, which is a good thing.

Someone said we had 9 MTBNJ guys there, which is huge. Last year if we had 3 that was a lot. Its nice having a strong team showing for these rides. I really enjoyed chillin at Norm's house after the ride. I ride with these guys a lot but rarely talk about stuff other then biking. It was nice to hang and bullshit before heading home.

If I race, the start won't be so narrow so call ups won't be as important. I still start poorly. I need to work on that.

Good times yesterday. Let's hope this ride continues. It's quite the discussion on FB still.

We're thinking about changing the name of the race to Walters Sexy as Hell Short Track. We have to check with our sponsors doe, you may be too edgy for them.

There were a bunch of benefits from doing the ST series at Mooch, one of them is getting a shit ton of kick ass photos from Luke every week. I am kinda a photo buff, the stuff Luke turned out at Mooch was top notch. Great lighting, plus he was hustling to get the right angle to keep it interesting.

Another benefit for me was to work on power. These 45 min. gigs were all about putting the hammer down the whole time...no pacing, just go. At least thats my plan, I was basically trying to blow myself up. Usually I try to conserve power on my enduro races, I needed to get away from that and blast off. I had good starts but would typically loose the top 10 guys in the first lap and settle into about 15th. This put me just in front of the mid-pack fodder, which helped from getting hung up in any technical areas. I was able to ride everything clean without waiting for the guy in front of me.

I finished 5th in the series, which is kinda a joke considering my last 2 races I finished 15th & 17th. But hey I'll take it, thats my reward for doing all 4 races. Originally I had planned to do 2 and mix in some century road riding and the Mass series race at Tuscora last Sunday. After the first ST race I said srew it, this is what I need to work on...power. Plus it was really nice hanging with my teamates every week.

The A Ride

This thing has taken on some life this year. Norm is really into it and has beaten the drum to get guys on the team to come out and get fast. This is one ride that will make you faster...or want to sell your road bike. Last night we had the regular MTBNJ team hammers of Norm, Ilya, Utah, and Eric. Pearl and Germy are jouneymen looking to wield the ax and did well last night in the blistering pace. The big thing on this ride is to know when the climbs are coming so you can prepare to hop on a wheel and turn yourself inside out to stay on.

I must say this ride doesn't get any easier the more you do it, but I need this to prepare for Battenkill. Vreeland and Goret got away early last night on a break away uphill. I'd like to say in prime condition I'd be able to jump on this but last night I was lucky just to stay with the peleton. Ilya was in the Vreeland/Goret break but dropped his chain and we caught him. Ilya was wearing knicker tights with socks pulled up to his knees. Someone in the parking lot commented that he looked like a revolutionary soldier(in a playful way). It was easy to ID Ilya in that ride.

After the ride we hung at Norms and ate pulled pork sandwichs my wife had made. It was a hit, Pearl ate mass quantities of pork. Once again the post ride hang out is always enjoyable. Norm put his recording device down in front of us...bad idea. If he didn't tell us he was recording us it may have been better. I try harder to act like an idiot in these situations.

I've really gotten into riding my mtb over the winter. Last winter when we had all the snow I was on my xc skis a lot. This past winter was good for mtbing, I got better at the tech stuff. I am going to have to fit a Cannonball run in more often throughtout the season.

After 4 wknds in a row of racing I need a break. Between my son's soccer and baseball schedule as well as work and riding things are getting more hectic. Also my older son needs a car. I was going to buy Norm's Jetta, but then we might not be friends anymore so I bagged that idea. Evan has been searching CL for Honda Accords all over the state of NJ. Last week I was in Trenton looking at a pos, now he found something in Passiac. I tried telling Shmev that nothing good comes out of Passiac but he just doesn't understand.

the floor of my back seat.

Norm's neighbors hated being associated with Passaic City so much, they changed the name of the town. And he drives around there with missing hubcaps.

You take great photos too, Igg! 😀

Always love reading your posts.

I'll have to get the pulled-pork recipe from Mrs. Igg...mine didn't come out as good as I hoped.

yeah i'll have to post up that pp recipe. my wife has become a lot better cook over the past year, its kinda like her hobby now...which i'm all for. She was taking cooking classes at Williams Sonoma, and spending lots o $$ on pots and pans. I didn't think u could make a fashion statement with cookware. I'm not one to get excited over kitchen ware but some of the stuff she comes home with is really nice looking...as far as cookware goes.

I'll have to post up some pics of this stuff.

Iggy's Weekend Edition

This post has little to do with cycling other then the fact that the person who wrote this also rides a bike.

Shmev shares the same interest in totally random moments as I do. When Jamie looks at a picture like this he asks why did you take that. Shmev and I share a camera, whenever I see something interesting that he shot I post it...like the pic above. He was in NY with school and shot this, I like it.

Pulled Pork Recipe

Robin as promised here is the recipe for pulled pork, this is the way my wife prepared it for the post ride meal at Norm's last week.

Ingredients for Pulled Pork Sandwiches:
2 Tbs. unsalted butter
2 Tbs. canola oil
1 boneless pork shoulder, about 3 lb.
1 yellow onion
1 garlic clove minced
1/2 cup chicken broth
salt and fresh pepper to taste
McCormick Pork Rub

For the Sauce:
2 cups barbecue sauce
2 Tbs Dijon mustard
2 Tbs honey
1 Tbs. soy sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 fresh pepper
6 hamburger buns

6889904564_be3789ba6b_z.jpg

In a large pot over medium high heat, melt the butter with the canola oil. Add the pork and cook, turning frequently, until browned on all sides, 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer to platter.

Pour off all but 2 Tbs. of the fat in the pot. Set the pot over medium high heat, add the onion and garlic, and cook, stirring, until the onion is slightly softened, about 2 minutes. Season Pork with McCormick pork rub and return the pork to the pot, add the broth, and put pork in oven(cook in large dutch oven) on 250 degrees for 4.5 to 5hrs. Transfer to a clean platter and let cool. Using clean hands or 2 forks, pull the meat apart into thin shreds. Remove and discard all the fat and gristle.

To make the sauce, in a large saucepan over medium high heat, stir together the barbecue sauce, mustard, honey, soy sauce, salt and pepper.

Add the pork to the sauce and cook, uncovered, stirring frequently, until the pork is very soft and the flavors are blended, about 25-30 minutes.

Serve on buns!

My wife has a cookware fetish. As a guy I'm more practical and don't like to spend a lot of money on pots and pans, but I must say I do appreciate the bold colors and designs. I hope u chicks are digging this stuff since Norm banned the word like hobby without the o and add a u.

My mini guy cave is getting good use with Shmev, Jamie and his friend Domo. During the week after school Shmev can fit 6 of his hs buddies in that room and play video games. Its good to know I'm contributing to the degradation of their grades, RU here we come. And Shmev got a haircut on his own, no more jew fro.

Ok here is one more for the ladies. I'm talking Wild Flag at SxSW hitting up Mellow Johnny's bike shop. Wild Flag's debut album self titled has been well recieved, and there on my radar. Like most chic bands I always think Go-Go's...how bout you?

More Shmev. I'll talk about bike stuff this week. There are some things I need to share, Battenkill is in 2 weeks!

A nice gift for the wife is a nice size crock pot/slow cooker (if she doesn't have one already), can prep the night before, set it before work and when your all home in the evening turn it off and eat. I like making pulled pork in the crock pot with Root Beer. However, her way also sounds delicious, just an idea.
