What kind of helmets do you guys have? I need to buy my first one and not quite sure which one to choose. It is for MTBing only.

Go to a shop and try on a bunch of them and get the one that fits you the best. They all pretty much provide adequate amount of protection. The main difference in price, in my opinion, is weight and flashiness.

Rumors

Giro is good for narrow heads and Bell is good for round heads... I have the latter of the two but went with a Giro cause it felt right... Bottom line- Go and try em on and it feels right then go with... The best looking helmet IMO is the S-Works helmet

I think ventilation plays a big part in the price too. Huge difference in going from my Bell Slant ($40) to a Bell Volt and Giro Atmos ($150-200).
No comparison as far as ventilation goes.

Try Specialized helmets too. They have a $40 adult helmet (used to be called the air force 3 but the adult version is ?) that is a great helmet.

I think it is time to retire my 10+ year old Troy Lee Edge helmet. I'm looking for extended coverage equal to or better than a Fox Flux. After whacking my head on a tree years ago at Hartshorne, I'm willing to wear a lot of foam and plastic on my head. No, I do not want to wear a full face helmet.

So what is out there other than the Flux?

I have a Giro Hex and like the helmet. What I really liked though was the customer service when I recently called to see how to get new pads and they shipped some out free of charge the same day.

So I'd go with a Giro. Between the Hex, Zen and many others you will find one you like and I would assume the same customer service and free pads would pertain to the Bell helmets too.

try em on

Ive got a Giro Xen for off road and a Bell Sweep for road. I defy the whole Giro for oval and Bell for round methodology. The Giro Xen i have came with a kick ass zip-up case, then again i dunno if it came with it or i ordered it separately when i employee purchased it. it was a while ago.

Most road helmets usually have smaller vents than mtb helmets... The larger vents on the mtb helmets are to compensate for lower speeds and less head winds... That said I use a road helmet exclusively

I have a Zen but it has been collecting dust since I have 2 bell sweeps. The zen feels like a lead weight compared to the sweeps.
