Good loop for first ride?

Hey all,

Looks like I might have a window to ride tomorrow morning (Thursday 12/10) before work (around 7:45am) and I was thinking about riding Allaire for the first time. I know where the Hospital Road lot is (I actually have an office in Farmingdale) and based on the maps it looks like I can just ride Orange for a full loop. Anybody here have any suggestions on a good loop, or is it like I hear...just get lost and explore! I have about 3 - 3.5 hours to ride and can't go over that. I appreciate the feedback and sorry if this has already been posted here before. Thanks!

The trails have been pounded by a lot of rain lately and should be avoided. They were soft and rutted before todays rain, and riding now will create even further damage. These are volunteer maintained trails and we ask that you (everyone) consider that and stay away until they have a chance to drain or remain frozen. Thanks for your cooperation.

Frank

tomorrow might not be a good day - I rode yesterday afternoon and there was a good deal of mud. after today's deluge, Im not so sure the good folks who maintain the trails would recommend riding Allaire so soon.

but when the trails are ready, I'd recommend....

just get lost and explore.

the place is a friggin maze so describing a good loop would be impossible.

plus, with 3 hrs or so you'll be able to hit all the trails.

all the trails are easy. only one trail could be considered moderate in difficulty - the one closest to the golf course (I think they call it "tiger woods").

I agree with all of the above and will add that Allaire is best ridden with a guide. Sure exploring is fun but its confusing in there and my bet is that you won't find the good stuff on your own. Wait for it to dry up or freeze and look for a ride there.

I've ridden there all year and still couldn't find my way around that place.

thanks guys, I'll steer clear! I only considered it because I heard it drained well. I'll look for a group ride as suggested, thanks!

Appreciate it !! Allaire does indeed drain well when the temps are a little higher. The tons of rain, night time cold and the fact that the trees are dormant, are not helping the trails drain. When things firm up I'll give ya a tour. 🙂

It took me a good 10 times to have a decent grasp of that place. hence my signature...

even now, while I can find my way back when I need to, I certainly dont have a "mental map" of that place. the trails are like spagetti.

and I am sure I am missing some of the good trails.

It's a piece of cake...turn right at the Pine trees. 😀

If you run into sand, turn around, and you will most likely find more sand. I also would advise hooking up with someone who knows the trails. You will see a few trails that are not too easy to find (unless you know where they are). Keep an eye out for rides posted here on the boards.

until about two years ago my knowledge of Allaire was based on a few races I did there in the early 90's. A ChrisG tour motivated me to get out and start exploring on my own. After a good six months of getting lost I can now string together enough of the fun stuff to ride for a couple of hours. There is still a whole section of trails that I can only find by accident or luck. Allaire's landmarks are more subtle than those at Hartshorne or Chimney Rock for example.

I'd recommend you hook up with some locals the first few times before going out on your own. That way, when you get lost at least you'll know there are some great trails out there somewhere!

I would agree I try to ride as much as I can, look for a black TJ I can show you a good loop.
also Frank starts the rides in march which is the best way to learn the trails.
and watch the rides section as we do winter rides all the time.

My gf and I are new at this as well. In the last few weeks we've been out there two or three times. We did the just go out and get lost/have fun approach. It was reccomended by the owner of beachwood bikes who im friends with. I must say that we have had a blast just exploring.

I imagine riding there in the winter months must not be easy. not much drainage due to colder temps.
