getting back on

Hello everyone. I have been out of it for a while and now I'm back in the saddle. Family life takes a lot of time. I used to ride the dirt bike trails in Maine before there were mountain bikes. Now I'm trying to find places to go in Jersey. I found a trail listed as prison escape trail and it reminds me of my youth only now I have a fat tire instead of a skinny one. You all seem to love your helmets on here. Honestly I haven't gotten one yet, but looking for a good fitting one. Any suggestions? A helmet wouldn't have made a difference with the crashes I used to take. Broken arm once and a chin into the pavement on another. Now I have responsibilities and the wife worries, so I will be getting one when I get back from vacation. Besides the roads here SU(K to even get to the trails. My road bike hasn't been used because of that. Looking forward to getting my boys involved when they are big enough.

Welcome. Where are you living? The trail directory (see links at the top of this page) should help you find some local spots.

And the helmet is cheap insurance for you and for the well being of the sport. Ride with it long enough and you won't feel right without it.

Welcome to the boards. There are plenty of good trails to ride take a peek at the trail directory up top and the rides section to see whee people will be going. Always helps to learn an area with thers leading the way.

Welcome back to two wheels.

Bell tends to make helmets for round, balloon shaped heads. Giro conforms better for eggheads. Specialized does a bit of both. I've crash tested a few brands and wholeheartedly agree that helmets are a good thing.

I am from Maine too! I grew up in and around Belfast.

I know the helmet thing seems weird at 1st but after a while it seems more weird not to have on.

Ask any bike shop employee how many helmets they sell to people who have smashed their old one in a crash. It is a staggering amount.

Many people bring in their smashed helmets to me to show thanks for suggesting one after it has saved them from severe trauma.

A helmet won't save you every time, but when it does (and it will) you will be happy to have one one.

This is just an easy thing to do that shows respect to the people who work hard to keep the trail access open and happy in NJ.

+ 1 Well said!

Boogy,

Welcome. Personally, I like the looks of the Fox Helmets. The back of the helmet seems to cover the lower back of your head nicely. Right now I have a skateboard type helmet. It's not the best looking, but it's saved me at least once and I don't ride without it. Good luck finding the right one for you.

Sorry I haven't been replying. I have been on vacation a lot lately and haven't been online. I did get a Giro Hex helmet from REI when they were on sale. It feels a little weird, but not uncomfortable. I'm trying to get the family going on the bikes and the constant talking about it, is getting them excited. So we are planning on bringing the bikes to LBI next month. I'm not going to bring them to Maine, because of our limited time up there. At least they are all getting on board.
