I had my first ride with the chunkys yesterday. They are not as soft as you would think but just a hair softer than most foam/rubber round grips. No slipping or spinning. Riding the HT, did some jumps and roll in drops without getting sketchy. No hand pain either but I never had a problem with my hands.
Bought a pair of Chunky's after reading this post. Put them on last night and tried them today. Nice grips didn't slip, wish they had super chunky's. I got big hands and the extra thickness would be nice. The hardest part of putting them on are the end caps.
I wrap mine with cork tape for the winters up here. It increased the diameter and the cush nicely for those with big hands. I take the tape off for the summer though for more control.
When they get pretty worn, they can get grooves and develop a much softer density in those areas, but it takes awhile to get to that point. The feel of these grips is hard to explain, it is something you should feel to fully understand.
hmmm. I am intrigued both by the ESI grips (I am in desperate need of some new grips) and by the apparent before-unknown presence of a bike shop in Bordentown. Less than a mile from where I used to live (on Park Street). Must get there soon and check out the aforementioned grips. Hope you have some black Chunky's left!
I was going to get the thinner ones for the new bike. Slightly thicker gloves if need be but I prefer thinner grips when not using something like ergons.
Love the grips too after many rides. Gives the ride a nice plush feeling. The only complaint I have with esi's is the lifespan. They aren't too fond of prickers
