I made the mistake of riding this evening without a cap underneath my helmet. Thought my ears were gonna freeze off... they still feel funny.

It's the straps of your helmet. I wish I could make it stop but can't. I've learned to live with it. I'd love to see if anyone had a answer!

I get the wind noise when my cap doesn't fully cover my ears... Even if just the bottom tips I my earlobes show, the wind noise it ridiculous.... I pull it all the way down and I'm good to go... could also be a helmet vent deflecting the wind over ears funny...

This seems to be the (google) consensus answer. I read ideas ranging from twisting your helmet straps to deflectors to earplugs. And silly stuff like this: http://www.slipstreamz.com/
Probably have to experiment and find something that works for you.

Great topic, never really thought much about it myself.

I use a Pearl Izumi Barrier skullcap with a Barrier headband over it when it's really cold. But that's more for warmth. I've never had any issue with the wind noise other than having to turn my head as I approach intersections so I can hear traffic. I think it might be one of those things that becomes a pain once you notice it but if you never think about it, it wouldn't bother you.

Have you tried a full balaclava? More coverage so it might help.

It doesn't bother me but with one of the hats I wear, the sounds it makes when it rubs against the straps is dusturbing. Sometimes sounds like someone said something you couldn't quite hear. This is especially nice when in a wooded area in the dark.

Some helmets are better than others.

Switched to the bell gauge and it is the quietest I have experienced by far. It may have something to do with the thinner straps it has.

Also any windstoper headband or cap will kill any wind noise if they cover your ears.
