I have cable operated disc brakes. the other day the rear one was doing nothing. I cleaned up with brake clean and will retry, but what is the proper maint for these?

you can use rubbing alcohol to clean the rotors and cable dressing in the housing where it is exposed, work the lever a few times after dressing the cable to work it in

First off, nice car.

Elaborate on "doing nothing". Was it because you weren't pulling the lever? Or was the brake operating but not slowing you down?

Thanks for the props and quick replies!! The brake is actuating when I pull on the lever and there is tension on the cable but does little to slow the bike down. The cable action appears to be ok. Seems like I have a friction issue on the disk. Front brake is working good. Thankfully....

I do tend to ride the rear brake more than the front on some of the downhills in the trails I ride, but I doubt I used up all the brake. I just re-adjusted the cable and the seems to be no change...

Are they Avid BB5 brakes? Do you ride in very wet muddy conditions?

That is a bad combo. The pads suck ass. I'm installing my third pair this season.

the cable probably stretched. Tighten it up a little on the caliper and give it a shot. I had this happen to me with Hayes cable disc brakes.

If they are Avid mechanicals, that big red knob on the caliber can be used to adjust the pads.

Thanks again for the replies. I took the whole assembly apart and found some dirt/ debris inside. I adjusted everything and now it appears to be working. It is rather loud squeeking now but if it stops I don't care.

No oil on brakes Norm... I did however find some grass and dirt in there. Can't be good either...

Also just found this link online for the brakes..

I am going to go back over the brakes using this procedure. Thanks all for you assistance!
