Opinions on best choice for MTB derailluer cables? I've used Gore Ride-On and was not impressed with the feel (lots of friction, but sealed well).

Jagwire ripcords. Much to be said in the prep of your housings too. I've since moved to a dremel to cut my housings. I also run full length housings, IMO all MTBs should be...

Prep is 100% of it. If a Gore cable feels bad, you did something wrong, period.

Having said that, I actually like using the non-sealed Gore cables over the sealed ones. The JagWires work well too, they come stock on a lot of bikes.

Man, I was soooo careful not to kink the Gore liner and I used a Park cutter for all the cuts. I think the bend required to get around my BB/rear pivot/FD area is severe enough that the liner doesn't like it. Until I zipped everything down, it felt pretty good.

cable help

Take a spoke to a grinder and turn the point into a very sharp rounded tip. This works excellent for re-opening the inner liner that gets kinked from cutting the casing. Carefully look into the end and use the tool to work that opening back into a perfect circle. Of course this must be done at every single point where the casing was cut.

That is what I do after using a Park cutter. The the housing end really gets mangled. I just cut another few millimeters off. The Dremel is a good idea but IMO, not required.

Has anyone tried Cable Magic from Rock n Roll with unlined housings?
Curious how well that works.

I pulled the liner back out and sure enough it had a small kink in it. I did my best to straighten it back out but of course it's damn near in the middle of the run.

It is better, and I'll run them through the slop this spring and then try the ripcord cables. The install looks less "delicate" a process, which is good for an idiot like me.

Thanks for the tips and info.

One tip that you may or may not be aware of...
Whether cutting with Park cutters or a Dremel, it always comes out best if you cut the housing with the cable still inside. So you're cutting thru the housing and the cable at the same time.** This prevents the liner from getting pinched, and the housing from getting deformed. 🙂

** But be careful not to cut off too much of the cable in the process!

I save the cutoffs rough cut housing 2" pass my initial cut then slide old cutoff in and woo-la mr clean cable housing cut...

That's a good idea. Hadn't heard this tip yet, so thanks!
