Death by Bicycle

issues/ opinions aside....

I am just surprised by the manner of the "presentation"

the whole thing was presented in a very "tabloidesque" fashion. the nature of the presentation, the mocking tone of the host, etc. just seems beneath the Wall Street Journal.

or perhaps my perception of the WSJ (as a professional news organization) is flawed.

crap, we need to sell a mini roller, so they can spin in the right direction!!!

they should back the bikes in anyway....

I cant really see it working without some mods but Some are suggesting to put milk crate underneath. Or bring a trainer and mount it on!

On a somewhat serious note, I've been recently walking around the city aimlessly Hopping from espresso bar to espresso like Kane from Kung Fu, and I've seen more of theses bikes than I expected being used. Ive seen some article that suggests theres been lots of people taking them out. The pricing makes sense if you pay for a year and go for short rides. Or if you are trying to impress a hot date with your cycling form for 30 minutes. But dumb tourists who don't read the pricing rules and take it out for 4 hrs will be hit with a ~$90 one time bill.

they are truly priced as a commuter solution. even the unlimited is unlimited 45 minute rides. i suspect if someone is waiting, you don't get the bike back....

just seeing people smiling on these things is worth it.

what is the correct behavior? rent your date a bike, or sit in the basket? or u pedal, date gets seat? they need some pegs, could get in an HOV lane then.

also, does this seed something unsuspected, making bike purchasers out of some people who try it as a novelty??

" The bike lobby is an all powerful enterprise" :hysterica

You can't make this $hit up!

the "Big Schwinn" line was epic

Dorothy Rabinowitz is appalled by all these "blazing blue" bikes in her "picturesque" neighborhoods. Too , too funny on so many levels. Oh and they are also fire hazards, lol. How can this " all -powerfull bike lobby" be stopped? What a rag of a publication the WSJ has become. Almost as bad as Baron's.

How is it that a great number of people have this image of bicycles as being some kind of bad thing. You have the WSJ in NYC, Essex county parks ban on MTB, some crazy lady in Clifton that calls the cops everytime 10 of us ride our CX bikes in a park, just to name a few. WTF? Really? I like the idea of getting these people out and pedalling. Maybe if the experience all the benefits they would have a different opinion.

good to see those bikes getting used. I think Ben showed him the feet on handle bars routine.

Holy shit. I am so glad I don't live or work in NYC. I do go in 3-4 times a year to get drunk. That's about all I can handle.
