First and foremost, this race was an A+ in every column. Mike and the Darkhorse crew has once again shown how to put on a race. The new parking, start, finish and party area was perfect. Big thanks to all the support people out on the course. That second to last water stop kept me going strong. It looked like the first aid squad donation bucket was filling up nicely too.

My Race:
Clearly the venue caused me to have my best race of the year. Norm and I had a bit of pact to start out easy and try to reel in as many as possible. It sounded good in principal but he on the SS and mee with gears... As much as I tried to not go on the start I simply couldn't let everyone in front of me. I was clearly out the back, not even close to the pack. Just guessing, probably 35th into the single track. I treated the first 20 minutes as a warmup; I put in 2 hard efforts and then got the HR down in between. My back has been bothering me for some time and it was a bit today. During the warmup I felt it a bit but pressed thru it. I managed to nail back about 5 people pretty soon. The first 10 miles I just kept a good pace watching my HR and backing down when I was above 175. I never passed anyone with a burst, I simply waited and took good lines and tried to make it easy on myself. I was rolling a 13.8 mph avg for the first 10 miles. I thought that a bit too high for me so focused on keeping a an even pace. The field seemed to thinning out quite a bit (I was passing more and more people). At about mile 15 I ran up on some pretty fast guys. I kept my method. Even pace, ride their wheel for while and eventually most people just said uncle and wanted a pass. The trails were great, the course was perfect. I came thru the finish area and Rob told me I was about 5 minutes back. Pretty damn good. I felt great. Stopped and dug into my cooler for some cold bottles. I was keen to eat and drink regulary. At about mile 31 I started to feel a bit of a cramp in my right ham string, in the open field on the opposite side of the dual access water station. Dropped into a harder gear and pushed it past a couple more people. At mile 32 I started my count down. Still felt good but the sharp hills were starting to burn. I had about 1/4 bottle left and was worried the cramps would try to get in there. It seemed like I had a good gap on the last guy I passed. When I came up on the water station with several young ladies I thought it good to stop and fill up. Took a couple sips and just pinned it the rest of the way. The sound of that vuzuwhatever horn was the best sound I ever heard. I have to say on that last stretch of roots I was talking out loud, "when is this going to stop?" It soon did. Dropped out of the woods, hit the pavement and I was done. For some reason I thought I had to go up the hill back to the parking area, someone was like, "uhh dude your done!" All in all an awesome day. The Longtrail never tasted better. 6th Pro/Elite.

One word for me--PAIN! Great day all around, I went too hard too soon and paid the price in cramps. The race setup was flawless, the Darkhorse boys are super awesome.

Very well run race, I agree. I like this parking/reg/start area better than the other one.

The cucumber salad needed salt. Otherwise, top notch job guys!

My legs are tired and I only did 20...Congrats to everyone, especially you 40 milers. What a great race they pulled off. Everything was perfect. I was surprised at the generosity. We got 5th place for co-ed and were awarded glasses and $$. Then to top it off, Maddog threw me a really cool hat. Good day !!😀

I crashed hard pre-riding Wednesday. Today I was surprised I was initially feeling good, figured I made my way into around 10th in SS then my tire blew off the rim in a corner at mile 9.5, co2 only put 10lbs of air in, limped until next water stop & luckily they had a pump. Lost 30 plus spots in the process. By mile 17 wednesdays injuries were not happy, so called it a day..I guess riding rigid injured was a bad idea! (BUT I still had fun)

Cat 2 Sport Men

Great race, super well run event, very generous payouts. Thank you Dark Horse Cycles!

I pre-rode the course last week to become familiar with the trails and this really helped, I like to know what to expect when I race. Mattybfat pointed out that the course has sections in it that keep you honest. 40 miles is no joke, if you get sloppy and tired your going to make mistakes…with this in mind my goal for the race was to stay steady and ride smooth.
So off we go a little after 9:00am. I lined up towards the front of the pack and stayed at the front 3rd of the pack and began to settle into a pace I felt good about. Grateful Rider was behind me and wanted to know if we should pass people to catch the leaders but told him we’re good. Looking at my HR we where doing fine, we were only 20 minutes into the race. Shortly after I went down, I took a bad line and my front tire washed out from under me. I did not have a lot of speed going so it was a minor fall with no injuries, but like 20 people passed me in 10 seconds…oh well.
Oreos Charge
I get back on my bike and think don’t worry, we are only about 3 miles in, I’ll catch up. Unfortunately there was a considerable amount of single track ahead, with no fireroad to make up some ground and pass the middle o pack cat 2 guys. I begin to pass some riders and come upon a rider in a blue garmin kit in front of me and see him passing riders and riding really clean. I hook onto his wheel and we continue to make our way up to the front of the cat 2 field. After the warehouse cut through I come to find out that the guy in the gamin kit is Oreo. After some brief talk I tell him it’s me and you, lets chase down the leaders.
At some point Oreo fell off the pace and I made contact with Kirt with 4 miles to go for lap 1. I was happy to see Kirt, we got into a groove and continued to lay down a steady state pace. Going into lap 2 we did not now if any cat 2 guys where ahead of us and we knew that Kush had a nasty fall and was hurting in the back of the pack and my friend John Kuhn flatted. I felt bad for these guys because they are contenders but where having a tough day.
Early on in lap 2 we encountered a lead group of Cat 2 riders, I was hoping we where the lead riders but no such luck. Kirt pointed out the rider with the orange shirt as a definite leader, there where some other riders in this pack but it was tough to know whether they were ss’s or cat 2 guys. On the long fireroad climb Kirt mumbled something about hating climbing but I didn’t think much of it. We passed Jdog on this climb and headed back into the single track. Within about 5 minutes it got real quite behind me, Kirt fell off the pace. The leaders where still in front of me so I pressed on.
I knew the orange shirt leader was in front of me, but along the way I encountered what I labeled #2 and # 3 rider, they had gears so they were cat 2 guys. I stayed behind them for awhile and observed them running out of gas, there back tires were bouncing off every rock after taking bad lines, there backs where moving way too much and every climb was out of the saddle. After the steep climbs by the power lines I passed both of them and they did not bother to chase.
At the warehouse I was right on the heels of the orange shirt leader and stayed there for the rest of the course. At the stairclimb I felt my legs cramping as I carried my bike up the steps, but they felt better when I peddled. The leader was still smooth and did not show any signs of cracking. I did not have enough power to pass him and make it stick so I was content to ride solid the rest of the way. I finished 20 seconds behind the leader.
In my mind I though I got 2nd behind orange shirt guy, but as it turns out I got 4th. There were 2 guys who finished before us, the winner a 16 yr. old beat me by 9 minutes and another rider who came in 6 minutes ahead. All I could do was congratulate the kid, Jacob Stern(3:15:48)…amazing.

My second lap was pure PAIN. Cramps were coming in waves...and I didn't know if I should stop or push harder. Going harder seemed to work🙄

A great course, and a very well-run great event. I ended up 9th in master 50+, 4:13...

The watermelon and long trail rocked!

Ill do a full race recap in my blog tomorrow when I get a minute...

NIce work team MTBNJ! Everyone kicked ass out there today.

The race was awesome. As usual Maddawg and company ran everything flawlessly. Course was great, food was amazing, and I got a free hat!

ok, must sleep now!

Awesome ride Pooriggy !! I got fired up when I realized we were getting close to the front of the field at one point and feeling good. But all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of brick! so I backed it off but it was too late, 2nd lap was slower by 15 min. 😱 .Still made my sub 4 hr target and considering just Fri I was going to bail due to a nagging cold but Sat felt alright so I went. Glad I did. Weather was perfect for August, cant ask for a better day. Good job everyone.
Oh, and that's a Pawling Cycle and Fitness Kit.

Good job Iggy, solid race! Like I said to you beforehand, I thought you would do well in this one because of your experience. This is an easy race to blow up on, and many people did. Not blowing up gives you a huge advantage.

While reaching for the tap of cold Long Trail, I joked w/ Chris G that it was the most fun I have had on my bike all week. He quickly replied "perhaps the most fun in 14 yrs". After some consideration, I think that summed it up. Most fun I've had on a bike in years! Great trail, great weather, great people, and great after race bb-q.

Chris B (Iggy), thanks for the pace. Keeping the heart rate low and riding steady paid off pretty well. My goal was 345. I finished in 3hrs 32 mins. for 9th place some cash and another pint glass! There were things cramping in my legs that I didn't know existed. This was the longest race I've done and the field was huge. Gary from LI and I raced most of the 2nd lap together. It was so helpful to have another rider to pace with. We kept motivating each other throughout the lap. He said he wouldn't sprint at the end and i laughed b/c there was no way I was even able to sprint. Needless to say, it never came to that, Unfortunately for him, he got hung up on a steep roller in the last mile and i rolled past him. I was glad we could finish up the way we did. I'm not sure that I would have hammered down (and then up) those hills at the end had it not been for those fans. Huge thanks to all who supported the race.

Rob- sorry you couldn't ride it, but your encouragement was greatly appreciated. Also, you put the right size T shirt in the bag!

until next time....

Holy crap, that was fun. I did 20 (thanks again, Walt) and could not imagine doing 40. I'm glad I parked behind Panhead, who was cool enough to hook me up with some Clif Bars, as I for got my food bag at home.

Madawg and the DH crew put on a great event. It was obvious they really enjoyed themselves out there. Great vibe and I really enjoyed seeing so many cool people there.

The only negative I saw was the Tool that screamed at his mother using the f-bomb in the transition as she was handing him his camelback. Loser.

I had an unfortunate tangle with a tree and Velocity Boy about 9 minutes into the race.

Smashed my quad pretty good. The pain got progressively worse during the 1st lap, to the point where I couldn't go any more at around mile 16, so they trucked me back to the car.

I'm having a bit of a bad luck streak. Though I believe you mostly make your own luck.

Fantastic job by Mike and Crew. This was the gold standard for event staging and promotion.

Mdawg and crew put on the greatest show on earth, frickin awesome. H2H needs to take notes on how to give back to the racers. As pedals said we got 5th in co-ed and may have done a possible place better. But once again fell victim to the flat monster. I actually was running tubes as both tires had slashes from bfat tour last weekend. I ordered a set monday in hopes to have by race day so no luck and no luck getting through without a pinch flat. One minor hiccup saw me lose ChrisT as we rode together for a good 5/8. Overall felt pretty good with just a little annoying lower back issue but proud of Patty bringing it home with a solid ride. I have come to conclude that being fat is hurting me far more then my liking. Time to lose some heavy...

PS thanks to cheering section (pearl, mandi & co.) that section I remembered in pre ride and knew it was close to end. But the horn and bells was awesome...

The last time I did this race was 2 years ago. I spent most of last year and the beginning of this year nursing various injuries. I'm still not 100% but I'm back enough to race so I picked the hardest one of the year to start off with. I managed to take 30 minutes off my time from 2 years ago which I'm really excited about!!! Big thanks to Maddawg and all the volunteers, you're all awesome. The cheering crew made everyone smile, thanks. This is one of my favorite races and I'm looking forward to next year!!
