Current Conditions

A couple of us went to 6-mile late today. Conditions were very greasy throughout the park. We chose to use some roads to avoid the worst areas such as the swamp before the new bridge and the bad water crossing near S. Middlebush. I don't recommend it unless frozen.

There is a tree down just a few hundred yards from the 27 lot.

Not while the sun is out. Shoot for early morning.
I havent been to the Rutgers Ecological Preserve in over a decade....I forget, does that have the same "Six Mile Mud" issues as 6MR or should I expect the trails to be decent? I dont recall the Rutgers Ecological Preserve having the same clay soil as 6MR.

I just hiked at 6 Mile. Like Jason said, it was slick where the sun was beating down on the trails. Otherwise they were decent. There is one trail that is older, that I don't think people go on much...anyway, it was under water, but just stay away from older, less traveled trails and let the slick stuff freeze and you'll be fine. 🙂 Of course I covered only a fraction of the park, but that's what I saw from the soccer field lot.

Chris, suki (woof) and I put in an hour on snowshoes this am.

Looks like it might be OK on the bike as long as you hit it below freezing temp.

One person rides it above freezing and it is all over.

I am hoping to try it on wed.

Much fun was had after when we had a drifting contest in the lot. I love 4wd in the snow.

I rode from 27 to the concrete bridge and back this morning. The conditions were not so bad as 2 days ago. I had to push my bike only few times and my way back was easier which is really good sign.

Great fun out there.

There is certainly some very nasty ice hidden under dirt. I found at least 2 spots that looked like dirt but slid like ice.

The ground is very hard when you fall on it. My second fall tore an ergon off the bar (this I have never seen). I was very slow getting up from that wreck.

Much like dry summer conditions. Please stay off the trails if you can help when the temps go above freezing. I know this is a far fetched request but it is worth a shot.

No studs needed which is pretty typical considering I bought a set of Nokians last season.

We found the middlebush water bypass to be frozen and well defined. No wet feet today.

Yes...Jay looked a little hurt so I did not run over him. 😉

The S. Middlebush water crossing was really high. The dune of sand on one side that is often above water could not be seen. 😡

Neil and I went to 6MR this morning. The conditions were very good. The trails were faster than this Tuesday.

Again if you wanna ride then wait until the next cold morning otherwise it will be disaster.

PS. And as J mentioned there are 2 icy spots and I fell once

Be careful on the white trail approaching Jacques Ln. A couple mini-ice skating rinks under the snow for you to break your ass on. Otherwise trails were lovely minus the few frozen ruts. Pretty sweet riding today with the snow falling and lack of wind.

nice work on the trail near 27

wow the conditions at six mile was good on monday ..besides the one patch of hidden ice i hit ...a BIG thanks to all who fixxed up the 27 side seems that most of the ride i took on the red trail was fast & dusty most mud was frozen. it makes me want to work nights so i could get out there more...and yes i do have lights but knowing i won't be found till morning haunts me ..i ride alone

Stay away sunday!!!

If you didn't see my above post in the rides section, it just advises to stay away. I know everyone sees some warmer weather and wants to clear the cobwebs but that is just as bad as riding after a rain. Ride when its frozen, it's fast, very fast.

Made the mistake of going there yesterday. The section by Route 27 was nice and dry, but it was pretty muddy by the stream. The mud had a lot of clay and it was quite a challenge to chip it away from my bike. I would say hold off a while before going.
