Looking for suggestions for my sons first bike. He turns 4 soon and he is ready for an upgrade. Because of his age do I buy a cheap one from box store or go to a local bike shop. I am leaning toward lbs but wife thinks a cheap bike is fine as he will grow out of it fast and may not like it in a year. What brands due u guys and gals suggest and where is best place to buy. I would like for him to look at them so please not to far from great adventure. Thanks for the advice in advance.

If you feel like travelling, go to 2nd life bikes in Asbury Park. I was just there and they have a bunch of bikes for little people. Then go to Mogo for korean taco's. Get the corn side dish btw.

I have two 16" cheap-o bikes hanging in my garage that my kids do not use and I would love to give one to you to free up space in my garage and help another MTBNJ member.

To answer your question - when it came to my kids, I went for the LBS bikes "Trek" - but I knew I was going to have lots of kids and they would get good use. That was the direction i went.

Let me know if you want the cheap-o to try out.

Because sucky bikes make me throw up in my mouth a little bit, I went with Cannondale. I figure they will get passed down to the little dudes, so its worth it in the end. The price point on better bikes for kids isn't that bad when you look at the quality compared to Walmart bikes. IMO its worth it if you have the extra bucks to spend.

The more expensive bikes made no sense to me for a beginner bike. My son was on a 12" and 16" big box store bike and was just fine. I bought him a giant for Xmas last year.

try your local co-op or boys club type bike exchanges, the one by me has a surplus of good kids bikes for about $25. Some are name brands like Trek and Giant, wish I knew about it when my kids were still little
