My WAG is the Body Control Module (or whatever Honda calls it...) is acting up. They can really be the bane of modern cars and will eventually brick an otherwise perfectly good vehicle, regardless of the brand. In theory, an open-source PLC could replace it, but getting the code out of it to duplicate would be a challenge since most manufacturers have that all pretty well locked down.

I was just attempting to repair my son's non-working high beams on his 18 year old Land Rover. Turns out there is no separate relay for the high beams. It is controlled by the BCM. Based on the online cost estimates if that needed to be replaced, that will be the nail in the coffin for this car come Inspection time.

This is causing a CEL?
Or is he in a state with real inspections?

PA has real inspections. No CEL. It is also possible that a wire was broken when he had a radiator hose replaced a month ago and just never noticed the high beam issue until this week. I'm back home now so he's on his own and knows nothing about cars and has no interest.
 
It's definitely one of the main reasons I keep waffling about keeping the White Whale (my 1992 E350 diesel conversion van) or getting a new(er) Transit 350. There are pluses and minuses to both... but from a pure "keep it until I die" POV, the E350 makes a strong case. It's a pre-emissions diesel, so it is fairly simple. Doesn't even have a turbo. So in theory, if I'm willing to put in the time to learn it, I can keep it running forever.

Got the BCM wet in my old Volvo V70R. All kinds of random stuff stopped working. The windows being the worst.

Yeah... not helped by how manufacturers put them in the car in a spot that can easily get wet... like under one of the seats... or in the case of R53 MINIs, one of the BCMs in buried in the back under the sunroof drains which were prone to getting clogged. Fun times...

That's a Smyth Performance Ute kit. Looks like it was finished with a wrap rather than painted. That particular kit is $5490. The guy who runs the company is the brother of the guy who operates (and started the company with) Factory 5, so he has a lot of fiberglass kit experience. The first kit was actually the Mk IV Jetta/Golf kit introduced about 15 years ago. They're kinda neat, but I don't know if I'd pay almost $19K for one...

I see a Jetta-based one at NJMP occasionally. The owner told me it went together really quickly. That particular one is a little rough but there wasn't anything fundamentally bad about it.
