Brake ???

Ride Giant XTC 29er 1. Having no luck with the hydraulic brakes. Came with juicy 3 that failed and were up greated by avid with the help of my much helpful bike shop to elixir cr's. Still have too many visits to bike shop with little problems like no stopping power, soft leavers and seem to need bleeding every mounth. Is this hydraulic thing worth it or do I have bad luck. Would it be crazy to replace system with mechanical brakes and say to hell with the hydraulic?
Dont mind going to bike shop, but feel like a pain in the ass.

It would not be crazy. When I sold my bike with Juicy 5's on them, I went with BB7's and been happy. Not as much power, but I don't really miss the hydros.

Any avid brake is not a good representative of what hydraulic brakes can be. Get some Hopes and you will not have those issues any more. There are other brands that will also be be better but I can only speak to what I know.
If you don't want to spend any more cash, mechanical brakes are fine too.

Take it from someone who has been on the first generation Hayes way back when and just about every hydro since. I become a hydro hater and have started the slow process of replacing each pair with BB7's. You all can tell me how great your hydros are but I found that BB7's matched with the ultimate levers to be better in modulation and reliability. Too much dicking around with hydros not to mention that after a it's first bleed they are not the same brake. No worries of boil overs, lost of power or broken hose lines. Sorry but you can keep your over priced hydros I'm sticking to mechanicals from here on out...

I love Hope Brakes.
I had similar issue you had. Hydo brakes are great.
I would go to a bike shop that knows what they are doing...

What shop are you taking them too? I have both juicy's 7's and elixir cr's and the elixirs are great. I had to bleed one of the cr's out of the box but since then they have been maintenance free. I am a fan of avid's on/off stopping power because modulation is a lever skill and too many people rely on the caliper to do the modulating.

Yes, you are crazy to switch to mechanicals from hydros.

i've had both juicy 7s and 3's and have never had a problem with either.

i had the 7's for about 2 years with no issues or bleeds necessary and the 3's i have had for about a year and a half with no issues either.

the 3's do lose a little power when i have to brake for a long time (every once in a blue moon, and it's not much), but i take that as a sign i'm not letting myself go fast enough downhill, so i'll let 'em go and pump them once or twice and they are right as rain again.

so IMHO, don't switch.

Do not give up on Hydraulics.

I prefer brakes that use mineral oil instead of DOT.

I really like Shimano and have them on 4 bikes. Stay away from Magura, I had 2 failed sets in last 3 years. I’m replacing Magura Louise with another set of Shimano. That will make 5 bikes with Shimano and they all use the same brake pads.😀

I strongly disagree about magura.

They have a 5 year leakproof warranty.

If you had trouble they would cover it.

I do agree w/ the mineral oil though..

I have 4 Magura equipped bikes. Zero issues.
