Biking Clothes

what are you wearing now?

my transition to lycra started with tights in the winter. first it was in the form of "fitted" xc ski pants. ride off road with something that doesn't get snagged every other minute and suddenly you get it.

now i'm a full-on matchy-matchy ballerina and i don't care. if you're going to go, go all in.

but to address your question, need? already been covered: helmet.

recommended: gloves, socks, matchy-matchy outfit. 😀

Switched to the bibs this year and highly recommend them. If you get the right size, they are pretty comfortable. I recommend jumping in with two feet and getting the bib, jersey, and socks. You will be glad you did.

I tried bibs but didnt like them...nipple rub (ouch!). wear them in winter when I can put a shirt underneath.

think i need to invest in a good pair of tighty shorts. have two old pairs that are old and thin. wore one of them yesterday and I swear you really could tell what religion I am.

What am I wearing now WOW?! what kind of forum is this? 🙂 Just a baggy pair of biking cargo shorts and underarmor wicking shirt, gloves , helmut biking shoes.

I just ride out on helmet , gloves , sleeveless jersey , and some thin normal looking bike shorts , but has the chamois underneath with some padding . I bought some soccer socks to protect my legs from any shit I may hit while riding , they do the job for now . Just ride in what your comfy with .

The fact that the bibs are waay more comfortable aside, this is a very serious reason to ditch the baggies. If you're hanging up on the saddle, you're inevitably going to crash because of it. If you're hanging up, it means you're shifting your weight around a lot - i.e. riding technical features that are going to hurt pretty bad if you fall on them.

What the bibs look like is irrelevant. To the general population, we all look like huge tools. Doesnt matter if we're wearing a neon tri suit or baggy street clothes. we all still look like dorks.

I switched to tights from baggies after I got stuck behind the seat on a descent in Sourlands. No joke, I had to ride until i found a boulder to stop next to and lean against before i could unclip and get back on.

well played. 🙂

i'm asking b/c i'm wondering if you're wearing baggies with the chamois liner underneath. that is the easiest and simplest way to start...and again, your taint will thank you.

i would fully recco an LBS (tell them we sent you! 😀) but if you can't get to one, nashbar has zoic which is at a lower price point and i believe hoss (hossmtb.com) makes quality stuff that won't break the bank either. my first forray into those when i started riding was a pair of those in camo.

Funny you should mention this.Just this morning I got my baggies caught on my seat.I started moving around and made things worse.I pulled my pants down in front of some women walkers. They must have thought I mooned them on purpose.Oh brother

I wear padded shorts under any type of heat gear shorts. The padding deff helps a lot. Its like night and day comparing riding without them.

I wear shorts over them for everyone else, because no one as tall and skinny as me should be out in public in tights.😉 maybe eventually i will get tho the point where i will start wearing them. I deff agree with the freedom of movement you have compared to baggies. Thats why new school bmx'ers were girls pants. Nothing to get caught on your seat.

Wool Socks!!?? sounds hot and itchy no?

The wool socks (as well as jersies) they sell for hiking/biking these days are not the same wool you're probably thinking of. The newer wool stuff does contain merino wool, but it's also mixed in with synthetic stuff. They're not that itchy at all, especially the socks. The jersies tend to itch very slight for like 5 minutes after you put them on, but you stop noticing it after that.

cofounder of TNT here...I say, wear whatever the hell you want. Im probably the most notable die hard baggy shorts guy here in that I raced an entire season of cat 1 in them. When you start riding 10+ hours a week, they become really annoying and you appericate the comfort of just lycra.

That's what I'll probably do for now. Change takes time with me. Once I can stand in front of a mirror in a lycra bib and say "ok I look like a tool, who f'in cares, this sh*t works better than the baggies" will be the day I switch.

Dont forget the padded bike-short-underwear things. I got a ptetty pricey pair this winter and love them. They have a name, but I dont remember what it is.

Got my shorts and sox

Found a pair of Fox baggies (after going to 3 bike shops) rode Saturday in them. Took some getting used to having the padding, but man what a world of diff when riding, especially when the bike seat hits you in the taint. Also got my woolies sox, SWEEEET! Hard time finding the baggies, I guess everyones into the lycra bibs and shorts, I just can't do it....yet. 😀

I felt the same way till my baggy shorts got caught on the front of my seat and I almost carshed in to a tree, now all I wear are spandex and I'm glad I do.The boys don't swaet as much and if you get a good breeze well lets just say AAAAHHHHHHH.LOL
