Bike Theft Caught On Video in LA

Despite the potential 'looniness' of the guy, I am on his side of the fence.

I can see myself reacting similarly if the exact same scenario played out. Think about it, you walk out of a store and your $2500 road bike is in the process of being stolen (I don't know about you guys, but it took me a LONG time to save up for my bikes). Obviously you are going to step in to try to prevent your bike from disappearing, and certainly the adrenalin goes to your head and clouds judgment when confronting a group of thugs looking to defend their attempted maneuver with violence.

With security and an in-flow of bike police posing absolutely no help despite a clear, loud call out for help, I can see myself thinking that the security guy and the thieves are in on something together... even the Police office trying to justify their actions by claiming that the bike is not in the bicycle rack would ring in the back of my head as a ludicrous action.

Yeah, the guy may be off the mark in terms of thinking everyone is out to get him, but after reviewing the video you've got to wonder why this wasn't cut and dry and the thief detained within 45 seconds.

In a related tangent, This video is a couple years old but a major wake up call. These guys push the limit and "steal" their own bike in the middle of Manhattan in broad daylight; it makes me sick to think about how little regard people have for each other...

One the Cops should of been called by security.

But the guy should of called the cops as well.

lol .. i like when hector comes in at the end and shows how it's done

to play devils advocate here - if the bystanders didnt actually SEE the guy cut the bike lock with their own eyes - its one guys word against the other. why should they automatically believe the guy with the camera?

on the other hand, the security guys still should have called the Police no matter what they saw (or didnt see) since someone was alledging that a crime had been committed.

Just another reason why I wish I was able to be strapped in NJ.

Just want to respond to this... This is the worst reason to carry a gun. You carry to protect your life from immediate danger, NOT your bike, car, wallet, etc.

Just say it out loud and imagine saying it in front of a jury. Well he cut the lock on my bike so I pulled out my gun and shot him. A gun is ONLY to be pulled if you are 150% prepared to pull the trigger.

Sorry, this is a hot subject with me. carry on...

Hopefully we do not derail the thread too much, but i never said anything about pulling a gun to protect a bike, or even shooting someone. A gun is to protect myself and my family from people like this who not deserve to be here - who is to say him or one of his friends didn't have a gun?

Not in Texas. You can shoot someone in the back as they run with your property in Texas.

Sec. 9.42. DEADLY FORCE TO PROTECT PROPERTY (Texas). A person is justified in using deadly force against another to protect land or tangible, movable property:
(1) if he would be justified in using force against the other under Section 9.41; and
(2) when and to the degree he reasonably believes the deadly force is immediately necessary:
(A) to prevent the other's imminent commission of arson, burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, theft during the nighttime, or criminal mischief during the nighttime; or
(B) to prevent the other who is fleeing immediately after committing burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, or theft during the nighttime from escaping with the property; and
(3) he reasonably believes that:
(A) the land or property cannot be protected or recovered by any other means; or
(B) the use of force other than deadly force to protect or recover the land or property would expose the actor or another to a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury.

Texas law isn't a good example...lol
