Backyard Pump

The exposure to sun doesn't help much either - I noticed with my backyard, that the sun just bakes stuff to rock hard so quickly.

that's what the dirt is like here - its the same dirt at 6 mile - nice red color, and when dry its almost brick-like. super hard and fast to ride on but near impossible to cut into with the shovel when its dry and hot. there are no rocks to speak of, but lotsa roots which can also be a pain in the butt too.

thing is when its muddy, clay is easy to move - but it gets so damn heavy too. stupid water has to be so heavy.

all this talk has got me psyched to get out and dig now tho. hopefully i can steal a few hours this sat or sun morning and get this started before i lose motivation and end up back at the RU-excuse for DJs.

Bring a shovel, lend a hand, and you can ride the one I'm building (Hunterdon Co.). Its about 60% done.

I do want to install a wall ride (8 high by 10 wide) before the winter hits. Anyone have any suggestions? Plywood or slats?

It's funny, the layout of my track is very similar to the greenhouse one, except I have one more roller....great vid.

Yep, that's bamboo in the picture. Planted it myself and boy is it taking over the back part of the yard. I actually had to move some because I kept running into it. 🙂

Sounds far, but I'd be willing to help out.

I'm probably about a 40 minute drive from you. If you can spare some time that would be awesome. Just let me know what works best for your schedule.

Thanks,

Bob

Check it out...the basic loop is almost done.. I still need to touch up some areas and close off the 3rd berm to complete the loop.

The track was wet from the the weekend rain, so it was hard to get good flow & speed.

Hey Bob - looks great! Wet and fresh dirt really slows things down so once it dries and gets ridden in, it will be much faster and better. You are at a fun part of a pump track now - just ride and change things as you get a feel for it. Ride it when it's dry and when the rain comes make the mods.

I just got done today with adding a foot of height onto the hairpin 180 and one of the exit a bit. It means I'm going to have to rebuild a whole straight but that's the fun thing with dirt you just move it around until it feels perfect.

BTW - love the capture at the end - I'm like that after 3-4 laps on mine and it's pretty much packed in like concrete!

Bob, Use 2x6 PT if you can. It will dry faster than plywood, allow gusts of wind by, and look alot more enviro friendly than a ghetto sheet of ply. It seems to screw down better than 2x4 and has some flex to make transitions. I've also used trex, but dont know if you want to spend that kind of $$.

Get a first hand look at the wallrides at diablo, they are built very well. I would help, but I am real far. If you want to provide a sketch of what your thinking, I can offer some advice, I used to build quite a bit of wooden stunts. The famed wooden berm in All***e was one example that lasted years in a public place. There is a video floating around somewhere.

Also, a small box may work better than a wall if thats in your back yard. A box could have 45 degree sides, similar to a wall ride, but the top being flat. It would give you an opportunity to pump up and over it to generate speed over the pump track. Just a thought.

bringing this thread back from the dead 🙂

I just started digging a pump track in my back yard last weekend. I'm totally stoked as the closest track to my house is an hour away. I have Friday off this week and will probably spend a good portion of the day screwing around with it.
may have some good progress by the end of the weekend. 🙂
maybe even enough for pictures...
