Allaire is still closed

Allaire

Been by park a few times; supposedly closed but horseback riders, hunters and hikers all in park.

Unless a ranger is parked there 24/7; well u get the point!

Hello ladies and gents. Lets just say if someone were to walk to the river from the parking lot, out to tiger woods, and back through the fireroad, it can be difficult. As a former tree farmer/climber for tree service, I can assure you this: There are many complicated tree falls lying on/around the trails. At times I was worried to walk under some as they are truly known as "widow makers" in the industry. If you do not have previous tree falling experience within a wooded area I would urge you NOT to run in the woods with a saw. While I do note not every fallen tree is a complicated cut, there are a few that are loaded by additional trees requiring both skill and the proper tools. Fire road access is blocked. I would not run into the trails with anything but experienced tree crew. Just saying.

Really good point. The amount of potential energy stored in some of these downed trees is scary, and not always easily seen. The danger can be huge.

This is why the state has closed the trails here due to the safety issues. If anyone has seen the MCPS web site most of the trail systems up there are in a closed state as well. lets be safe and be able to ride some more..

any word yet from the park on their progress. is tm still on for sunday or are we looking at rescheduling?

As I have not heard back to wheather the trails will be open this weekend I am going to reschedule for next Sunday 11/25.

Are you riding somewhere if the trail maintenance work is not happening tomorrow. I'd like to get out if its not any further south of Allaire

We are good for next sunday to go in for a TM session as for riding I went to Belleplain yesterday it was in fine shape as is Wharton...

went to allaire yesterday, put a saw on my camelback and clean a few trees while i was riding, and i wasnt the only one with the same idea. didnt saw any danger, if its to big for you to cut, just dont touch it, there are a few trees that is need a chainsaw but most of trees down are little.
never seen so many people there. riders, hikers, fishing, horse riding... alot of trees already cut and clean..

There are a lot parks that from what I hear still closed from a state parks standpoint. If you ride in the park it will make it tough for every one who is trying to leave a good impression with the state parks department. Plus I have heard that there are still quite a few widow makers that can fall while you are under them. That coupled with the fact that the main fire roads are still not clear so any EMS vehicle will not be able to get in is most likely why the state has the parks closed. We will hopefully be out Sunday morning to clear the larger of the trees plus the widow makers from the trails.

Park closed

IVO,

Sure it may look like its open and theres only 1 word for that.. SELFISHNESS...Im willing to go out on a limb here and say most people out there riding and doing there own thing dont come out on the TM days. They are out there with there own Agenda and the park being closed is hampering that. I understand everyone wants to ride but right is right.. Unfortunately nowadays lawsuits are all too common, and it only takes 1 incident for a park to shutdown. Remember this is NJ home of the Greedy..

Before this spins into a finger pointing slamfest, I think a little history lesson is in order. Some of you may not have been around when Allaire was to be closed...forever. Back in '99 the Superintendent was going to close the park because the trails were in such dis-repair that it was easier to close than repair. ATUG/JORBA was formed to work under the parks direction to improve conditions. Now we enjoy a pretty good relationship between the park and the cycling community, but that can easily change if we ignore their signs and tear down the tape they use to close the lot. So yes, some of us are more sensitive to the fact that others are ignoring the rules, but there is a damn good reason for it....we worked really fucking hard to get where we are at and don't want to go backwards. Thanks for your time and consideration

I think part of the problem is that the state parks website does not mention park closures, unless i'm completely inept and didn't see it. So my gut feeling is many who drive, lets say, 30-40 minutes to come out and see the park taped off, will rip down the tape and ride. This forum is the only reason I know the park is closed, but many do not belong to the forums.

You are not inept....the state site sucks and the parks method of closure does as well. I won't even get into the fact that we could have cleared the trails a couple of weeks ago. It's just a really bad situation.

All,
here is the latest from our park rep. the trails are still closed so we are not going to be out this Sunday. That being said please respect the fact that the park is closed this is coming down from the state level and not from our local reps. I have also heard that the park police are looking to give out fines to people riding in all the state parks that are closed. you can check this web page to see what parks fall into this.
http://www.nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/parks_open_close.html
