Allaire Conditions

Any update from the Allaire area this evening? We ended up with 3" of soft fluffy snow in Little Silver after it changed over from rain.

I am a mile away as the crow flies, shoveled 1.5" of powder off the driveway and hour ago. Looking at freezing temps tomorrow, hopefully the snow cover provides a little traction over the icepack on the trails from the last week.

lol, if it is what I think it is studded tires are in my future, and I know just where a set is. Just have to justify the price 🙁

Allaire was by far the perfect winter condish that I experienced this morning. No ruts, no foot traffic and 2" of blow just enough for traction. Underneath the snow was a crunch layer of ice in some spot. If I dont have any prior engagements today I will stay longer. No tire tracks but some hikers on some areas and deer tracks. Alone in the woods is like heaven to me. 🙂:getsome:

^ What Sandman said, perfect. I would call it Italian Ice, firm base with 2" of soft granular on top. Not sure how long it will last, get it while u can.

Got in over 8 mles of XC skiing before it got dark😉

Tree down on serpentine in a bad spot, heads up! I would have tried to move it but I was by myself and it was 9 at night and my feet were already frozen.

Ps. First time post. My name is Chris and I like to ride bikes.

Chris, you mean you were by yourself and the sun was going down, because by no way would you want to promote riding at night in a park that clearly posts no traffic after dusk......:hmmm:

Welcome aboard and thanks for the heads up.

Good point Johnny!

Welcome Chris..... When you get a second, search the site for "Fight Club". [emoji6]

It is the top of a scrub oak that landed in the middle of the trail. Multiple branches all only a few inches thick. All can quickly be cut w a bow saw, maybe even just dragged out of the way. I'll attempt to drag it out next time. It is towards the end coming out of a corner before the straight away.

Allaire was great this morning. Better than yesterday because the trails are packed. I went to tiger woods and Im surprised no one venture out there this week after the snow. It was rideable on a fatbike because the trails are still untouch except from the deer tracks. By the time Im heading out some trails are beginning to thaw due to the temp are getting warm today. My advice, this is the time we need to stay away from the trails due to the thaw and trails are getting soft. I know some people are itching for a ride when it gets warm but my opinion, the best winter riding is when the temperature drops to its lowest digits. The colder it is the better, trails are frozen and fast. I hope the trails stay the same after tomorrow's snow forecast.

It was slushy out there this afternoon. Some bare spots on the trail. Not bad on a fatty, but the skinnies were pushing thru the snow to the dirt below in a lot of spots

Ditto, no standing water either. The non-snow cover was damp, but still frozen undernear. Whatever ice was left was almost "textured", allowing for gobs of traction at a lower air pressure.

All in all a good ride. No mud on my bike at the end, 99% of the trail is still on the ice tread. With the freeze today and windy conditions mixed with snow, we should look at a total re-freeze. Be carefull for slippery conditions and keep your fingers crossed for a quick 2" of snow to rebuild traction.

Another Chris that rides bikes.. Just what we needed...

Thanks for the heads up Chris and hope to see you out on there again soon.

I tried allaire today and bailed out due to the icy trails. Not worth it.

Rode there before dark with spikes. Mostly ice on all trails. Some bare sections but very small areas. Tiger Woods was a bit more crusty snow but also some icy areas. Spiked tires are a must if going tomorrow morning. Probably should stay out once it starts thawing by noon
