26 v 29r

I didn't have a bash guard on the stumpy. It is a demo, so I didn't want to mess with it. It isn't that the ring was hitting roots and rocks, it is more of a pedal issue. Maybe it's my beginner-like skills. Doesn't the BB also lower the cranks; making it more likely to scrape your feet? I don't have this problem with my Fisher Marlin.

This thread first posted on 7/25. As promised, I digested all of your input: I tested as many bikes as possible and decided that the 29r is the ride for me. I began looking at the HiFi found a consistant unusual wear on the bottom tube from chain rub. Apparently, the guy at the Tourne Treck Demo said that GF will redesign the flaw for 2010. So, I did not go with the Fisher. I looked around and tested some random bikes, and was turned-on to the Salsa Big Mama. That's after I learned that I needed a second mortgage after building a RIP9 on Speadgoat.

The Big Mama is a full squish; which I want due two herniated disks. It'll be tricked-out with all Shimano SLX. And, thanks to you good buddies out there, I selected a flat bar (time will tell...).

So, with all that said, I will now be able to weigh-in on future bantering between the great divide; 26 v. 29r! Feel free to ask my opinion on the trails, as well. You won't be able to miss the Orange-Funk BIG MAMA. Just yell out "Casper!".

Curious about this one. Do you mean downtube? Seat stay? Chain Stay?

I've never heard about this one.

prolly the chain stay, right?

and congrats. that big mamma really is BIG. IIRC jay had one in halters when i was there and it looked like a damn motorcycle.

Chainstay. Check out the right side. It's lower than the left. A friend tried to move is lizard skin closer to the BB to protect it, but slips back towards the rear. Strange, but the wear does happen.

Ditch the Lizard skin & wrap an old inner tube around the chainstay. That's an old trick that works great.

Thanks! It's supposed to be ready by the end of this week. Fingers crossed that there'll be a window of dryness to give her a first workout. Will let you know how she rolls...

Here is a plug for the Jorbafest. Especially for anyone else out there who is looking to buy a new bike. There will be lots of demo bikes that people can take out for a ride. Last year they had Giant and Specialized. Bring your helmet, pedals and shoes.

+1 on demo'ing the bikes. I demo'd a Giant Trance X1 at last year's Jorbafest and ended up buying it.

THE Answer

OK.... the correct answer is... there IS no answer.... If you're NOT trying out different bikes and experimenting with different components, styles of riding, places to ride etc., then I think you're just missing out... plain and simple. THAT is what mountain biking is all about... I happen to be in my "rigid 29er/pre-geezer phase" at the moment, but I've passed through so many other phases, I'd be crazy to believe I've found THE answer...

Never stop asking the questions, and the answer(s) will become apparent....

Stay Thirsty My Friends.

I was gone for what seemed like an eternity and I was hoping to see some new debate like whose mom cooks the best food (mine does by the way) but I guess not much has changed around here 😀

Enjoy the new ride!
